NASA Ames SmartMobility Systems Engineer

Position Description

Smart Mobility (SM) at Ames is a project within the Aeronautics Project Office at Ames Research Center that enables aeronautics research activities that involve flight of uncrewed vehicles. By working closely with the NASA Ames Aviation Operations Management group (Code JO), SM supports aeronautics researchers by assisting with flight operations, preparing for airworthiness and flight readiness reviews, and managing the research missions. SM also maintains a book of infrastructure requirements that aeronautics projects may need when flying at Ames, and SM manages the integration of these infrastructure systems in coordination with the requesting organizations. And finally, SM serves as an initial focal point for external, non-NASA partners to engage in aeronautics collaborative activities.

Job Responsibilities:

As an Engineer, you will be responsible to support the following:
  • Perform a combination of some or all of the following duties:
  • Understand, visualize, analyze, design, develop, test, evaluate and operate a broad range of equipment, aircraft, systems or products to accomplish the NASA mission.
  • Develop, test, evaluate, research, operate, maintain, and remodel systems or products.
  • Analyze and study performance requirements against an array of diverse considerations, such as safety and reliability.
  • Investigate phenomena encountered in testing and monitors and analyzes unknown or unfamiliar data.
  • Perform multiple functions which may include: planning, design, test and evaluation while:
  • Working alongside other engineers to perform various duties
  • Working with industry and FAA representatives
  • Conducting special studies for NASA Programs/Projects and its partners
  • Submit status reports
  • Perform payload integration: Documentation, reports, and analysis
  • Draft payload integration manual with input from subject matter experts.
  • Design and manufacture supporting structure for UAS setup and operations
    • Data structuring and assessment
    • Review and draft pre-flight checklists and documents with SMEs
    • Flight operations and documentation
    • Camera payload, integration, and documentation


    Required Education/Skills
    • BS in systems engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering or similar technical degree
    • 3-5 years of experience in Systems Engineering
    • In-depth familiarity with Engineering
    • Experience with system-level responsibilities
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to present information clearly to a diverse audience


    Additional Desired Skills
    • Working knowledge of flight or aerospace simulation and test environments and depth and knowledge of aeronautics
    • Experience in engineering and software development
    • Software development background
    • Demonstrated team skills
    • Foundational experience as a development engineer producing final design products and study analyses and deliverables
    • Disciplined organization habits, time management, and budget management
