Job Description
The Department of Neurosurgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has very active and well-established programs in both neuro-oncology and cerebrovascular clinical research, and we are broadening our laboratory research effort in these areas. We are looking to recruit highly motivated individuals to fill the following 4 open research positions for investigators holding MD, PhD, or MD/PhD degrees:
Tenured Professor level Neuro-oncology Researcher
Assistant or Associate Professor level Neuro-oncology Researcher
Instructor level Neuro-oncology Researcher to work with Dr. James M. Markert
Assistant, Associate or Tenured Professor level Cerebrovascular Researcher
The tenured and tenure track Neuro-oncology positions are open for broadly based research interests in the field of Neuro-oncology, including but not limited to both primary and metastatic adult brain tumors, genomics, proteomics/kinomics or epigenetics at the single cell level, immunobiology of host-tumor interactions and relevant patient-derived models of cancer. Successful applicants for the tenured and tenure-track Neuro-oncology positions will work in partnership with the UAB O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Neuro-oncology Program. Added preference will be given to candidates whose research can synergize with existing UAB faculty to enable programmatic research support, e.g., multiple (principal) investigator grants.
The competitive candidate for the instructor Neuro-oncology position will have a research interest in primary and metastatic adult brain tumors, genomics, proteomics, kinomics and epigenetics, tumor immunology, and/or relevant patient-derived models of cancer. The major focus of the laboratory is oncolytic viral therapy and immunotherapy of cancers, for translational research. Applicants should be comfortable supervising and mentoring research staff, students, and residents. Common assays in the laboratory include tissue culture, viral culture, PCR, RT-PCR, cloning and oncolytic viral construction/engineering, ELISA, Western blotting, Southern blotting, mouse surgery and necropsy, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence microscopy. The laboratory also requires familiarity with biostatistics and enough familiarity with bioinformatics to be able to either code or work with UAB bioinformatics to perform a variety of clustering algorithms and deconvolution analyses to be performed on pre and post-treatment specimens. The laboratory is moving to a larger involvement in single-cell analyses and spatial transcriptomics and the successful candidate should be prepared to develop knowledge and skills in these areas.
Competitive candidates for the cerebrovascular position will have areas of interest that include but are not limited to: protective effects of ischemic preconditioning; endothelial dysfunction in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke; role of inflammation in stroke, mechanisms of angiogenesis and arteriogenesis in chronic ischemia, and platelet/surface interaction. The successful applicant will join a productive and collaborative interdisciplinary research team consisting of investigators in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Radiology at UAB. We will provide ample opportunity for developing independent work with state-of-the-art equipment, facilities, and analytical methods.
Ideally these positions will be filled by candidates devoting their full effort towards research, with no clinical duties. Fractional effort towards clinical duties is possible if it meshes with the plans of candidates seeking the tenured and tenure-track positions.
