JOB TITLE: Director of Surgical Services

REPORTS TO: CNO

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general direction, and in accordance with the State of California Practice Nurse Act, plans, organizes, and supervises nursing staff; manages, reports on, and provides resources for direct patient care in the Surgical Services Unit as directed; and to perform related work as required. Manages, organizes, directs, and reviews the nursing services provided in major patient care units or clinics. Develops capital equipment budget plan, provides input into the preparation of personnel and operating budgets, and is accountable for budget variances. Schedules, assigns, manages, and evaluates staffing; evaluates nursing personnel in the implementation of treatment plans, proper medical procedures, and proper use and maintenance of equipment. Demonstrates professional responsibilities by cooperating with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and departmental goals and objectives. Fosters employee development through performance appraisals, constructive feedback, and recognition of exceptional abilities and education, and competency assessment and validation. Identifies opportunities for improvement in unit patient care and operations, establishes objectives to be achieved, and plans, implements, and evaluates the action plan for achievement improvements; initiates and/or conducts audits to identify areas requiring improvements. Collaborates with physicians and other department managers to assure quality patient care and smooth unit operations. Performs all other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Possession of Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university. Bachelor or Master Degree in Nursing preferred. Three (3) years of experience in an OR setting. One (1) year of supervisory experience or demonstrate leadership and critical thinking skills as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital or non-acute healthcare facility.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. BLS and ACLS certifications. CNOR required.
