Engineering Manager - Industrial Business Unit
Location: Hartland or Milwaukee, Wisconsin
POSITION SUMMARY: The Engineering Manager is responsible for the Build To Order (BTO) Product including New Product Development and Engineered To Order (ETO), along with the process flow within the Industrial Business Unit for those products. Position has a leadership and supervisory role over New Product Development (NPD) engineering, and design engineering support. This position plays a key role in the success of the Business Unit by streamlining the process, achievement of business initiative goals and supporting effective communication flow with manufacturing, sales teams and executive management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead Engineering Activities:
Navigates new product ideas through the research, analysis and approval process. Originates product ideas and reviews and approves product ideas as developed by other Dorner staff members. Directs the technical design of all new product development and product revisions for both standard products and systems components. Oversees product design to ensure the product meets customer requirements and manufacturability is optimized for quality, low cost, and production output. Recommends capital expenditures such as tooling, test fixtures, and assembly tooling along with production methods for new products as appropriate to assure quality, timeliness and cost effectiveness of production. Provides technical leadership over engineering functions including solutions offered Investigates methods or procedures to streamline the engineering and manufacturing process Owns the metrics for approval and release performance for engineering group. Investigates new solutions or methods to solve difficult design challenges Accountable to internal and external customers on time and cost targets Provides sales support pre- / post-sale Leads coordination activities with engineering, estimating, manufacturing, and management Travel 15% to support Business Unit sales activities, oversees occasionally to sister companies, visit customers and trade shows
Administration/ Coordination within Company:
Determines work assignments and work load for engineering functions to support Business Unit goals and objectives Establishes, maintains, and updates NPD project schedules Leads communication within company regarding design and key project learning Determines and generates reports on key business unit metrics Provides metrics to employees and organization Provides personnel performance evaluations

Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Management experience: 3 years directly managing a team of engineers Engineering new product development experience: 5 years' experience in a similar business environment requiring new product development process including a supervisory role. Packaging, material handling, conveying automation experience. Computer Skills: CAD and like software (proE/solid works) PC skills - familiarity with Microsoft software. Other Requirements: Time management or similar training Effective communication - solid verbal and written skills

- Provides direct supervision and technical assistance to Business Unit's engineering functions.
- Manages multiple project activities with engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, and management.
- Continually investigate methods or procedures to streamline the engineering and manufacturing process
flow for improved performance - Accountable to internal and external customers to meet time and cost targets.
- Provides technical assistance and support to Sales both pre- and post-sale.
- Investigates new solutions and coordinates with purchasing on peripheral equipment and assemblies.
- Establishes, maintains, and updates product development project schedules.
- Participate on various teams as needed to support COMPANY initiatives and goals.
- Provides metrics on performance for both engineering support teams and NPD.
- Manages direct reports, mentoring and responsible for their development.
