Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic in the VCU Department of Pediatrics isthe only specialty group in Central Virginia dedicated to the evaluation and ongoingtreatment of all pediatric pulmonary diseases and the only accredited cysticfibrosis center and sleep lab in the region. Specialists provide in-depthclinical evaluation, diagnostic testing and ongoing treatment for pediatricpatients who have chronic pulmonary problems such as asthma and cysticfibrosis. Because the care of pulmonary patients is complex and multifaceted,the staff and faculty train medical students and residents to work closely withprimary care physicians who will have a continuing role in addressing the day-to-dayhealth needs, while a specialty team works to address the unique needs ofchildren with lung problems. There is a commitment to community partnerships toadvance care, education, and community outreach for common pulmonary problems,such as asthma.

Chief Purpose of this position:

The Children's Hospital of Richmond (CHOR) at Virginia CommonwealthUniversity (VCU) is conducting a national search for its next Chief of theDivision of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine. We are looking for either aphysician scientist or a clinician-educator at the Associate or full Professorrank. The candidate will direct a division of 8 physician pulmonologistsand sleep medicine physicians. Responsibilities will include mentorship andcareer development for members of the division, developing successful outreachand regional programs, sustaining a nationally recognized research program, andfostering a culture of excellence in teaching and clinical care.

The candidate with energy, imagination,and vision will assume leadership of a superior academic pulmonary and sleep divisionthat provides clinical coverage within a Pediatric Medical Center. Our division isundergoing significant dynamic growth and has active externally funded bench,translational, clinical, and epidemiological research and Quality Improvementprograms. The Division includes a fellowship program, high functioning CFcenter (part of the CFF Therapeutic Development Network, Success with TherapiesResearch Consortium, and CF Learning Network), community asthma program, sleepprogram, and collaborates in multidisciplinary aerodigestive, chronic vent,neuromuscular, and sickle cell programs.

Position Responsibilities:

TeachingFaculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the area ofPediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine. Faculty will provide guidance andmentorship to Medical Students, Residents, Chief Residents, and Fellows whenapplicable.
ResearchFaculty member will be expected to obtain funding from an external granting agencysuch as the NIH, AHRQ or foundational granting agencies such as the CFfoundation or equivalent. Faculty member will be expected to develop a scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applicationsand external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise inthe department.
ServiceFaculty member will serve on departmental or School ofMedicine level committees when appropriate, as well as provide professional servicethrough journal review, conference presentations, etc.

ClinicalFaculty member will serve as a leader, role model, andphysician in Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine for the Department ofPediatrics.
AdministrativeFaculty will take on leadership and administrative duties associated with the role of Division Chair.

Required Qualifications:
  • MD/DO
  • Residency training in Pediatrics
  • Fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonary medicine
  • Eligible for VA medical license
  • Board certified in Pediatric Pulmonology
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level in a related discipline
  • Track record of external funding
  • Administrative experience
  • Experience successfully mentoring junior colleagues and trainees in all parts of the academic mission
