Mission or Goal of Unit: Pursue the Research, Clinical, and Education Missionsof the academic medical centerin the areas of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care. Through bench research, clinical trials andthe rigorous study of prevention and control, our scientists pursue the manyroles of medicine in treating, preventing and controlling the adverse effectsof cancer. Our hallmark activity istranslational research, where our physicians and scientists work to bringlaboratory discoveries to the patient bedside as quickly and safely as possible. Through our training programs, our facultytrain the next generation of scientists and physicians to further advancescience and practice.

Chief Purpose of this position: The VCU School of Medicine Division of Hematology, Oncology andPalliative Care and Massey Cancer Center are seeking an Oncologist - ClinicalInvestigator with a clinical focus in sarcoma and malignant melanoma topractice at our flagship and satellite locations. This position will have a role in advancing the clinicalresearch mission and will be expected to work collaboratively with othermembers of the Massey Cancer Center.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching | Trains medical students, residents and fellows in the laband while in the clinic. Expected toactively participate in providing clinical research opportunities to fellows.

Research | Develops clinical trial protocols and complies with allregulatory requirements. Develops andinitiates investigator-initiated trials. Works collaboratively with laboratory-investigators to translatelaboratory findings into new treatments for cancer. Writes and submits grant applications duringthe course of the academic year. Writesand publishes multiple manuscripts during the course of an academic year. Serves as an investigator on funded grants,NCCTN and ETCTN trials. Serves as a PIor Co-investigator on peer-reviewed grants and is responsible for complyingwith all institution and sponsors terms and conditions for grant funding. Ensures resources are utilized optimally foradvancing the clinical research program. Participates in Massey Cancer Center Core Grant and CTSA applicationsand site visits as requested. Participates and engages other members of theMassey Cancer Center and the Department of Internal Medicine in collaborativeresearch projects. Stays up to date onthe clinical trial menu offered through the Massey Cancer Center and educatespatients on their options for treatment on clinical trials.

Clinical | Attends on the inpatient wards and consult service, and/orsees patients in the outpatient clinic with a focus on sarcoma and melanoma. Total clinical effort is ~ 75%.

Required Qualifications:
  • Board certified or eligible in medical oncology or hematology
  • Eligible for Virginia licensure
  • Clear evidence of accomplishment/potential (e.g. - publications) during medical school, residency, fellowship, and/or early academic career
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Seasoned cancer specialist who possesses national and/or international recognition in the clinical and research disciplines of cancer
