SUMMARY

The Hematology & Oncology Division strives to deliver bone marrow transplant clinical services to children that includes: stem cell therapies for leukemia, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disease, solid tumors such as neuroblastoma and relapsed Wilms tumor, bone marrow failure syndromes, relapsed Hodgkin lymphoma, sickle cell disease and CAR-T infusions.Primary responsibility will be to provide leadership for the Advanced Cellular and Gene Therapy program which includes Clinical and Quality programs in BMT and Cell Therapy. The Medical Director will have accountability for the development and maintenance of the clinical, professional and administrative activities in conjunction with the Division Head and Practice Manager. The Medical Director supports the clinical team's research, academic programs, faculty appointments, faculty development as well as having clinical responsibilities.

Responsibilities

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Monitor/Assure the professional performance for all Bone Marrow Transplant medical staff and practitioners.

Recommend to the medical staff the criteria for clinical practices.

Participate in administrative activities.

Participate in the work of building schedules for faculty and APRN staff providing care.

Act as mentor and resource to junior faculty regarding clinical care and professional development.

Collaborate with the leaders of the pediatric residency and the UConn School of Medicine in support of residents and other learners in the division.

Act as a liaison between specific clinical programs.

At the direction of the Division Head, act as liaison to other clinical services such as Hematology/Oncology.
(E.g. PEM, Neonatology, etc)

Assess and recommend off-site sources for needed patient care services when necessary; coordinate and integrate with other programs and clinical services, as well as within intra- and inter-departmental programs.

Work collaboratively with others on program goals and planning/evaluation, including resource planning in partnership with the Business Operations Manager.

Collaborate with the quality lead in continuously assessing and improving the quality of care and services provided. Participate in quality improvement programs, as appropriate. Participation in Quality Assurance and Performance Committees.

Actively participate in relevant committees, either on a membership or ad hoc basis, which are responsible for the quality of patient care and services.

Participate in orientation and continuing professional and/or clinical education of all professional clinical personnel in the department or service as requested. Actively contribute to education of interns and residents. Provide educational sessions for staff, residents and fellows as well as referring physicians.

Provide leadership, training and education for medical students, residents, as well as fellows.

Coach clinical staff in supporting efforts to optimize appropriate reimbursement for Department services. Maintain cost-effective approach to clinical program management.

Maintain professional expertise through active involvement in professional organizations and continuing education programs. Encourage team members to adhere to professional standards and to expand competencies.

Actively work as liaison to specialty providers ensuring collaboration and timely phone and visit consultation for patients.

Work actively with professional staff to address interpersonal issues affecting performance or work environment.

Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARD.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

MD or DO Degree
5 years of experience
2 years Supervisory leadership

LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

Board Certified / Board Eligible Hem/Onc
Registration certificate from the Drug Enforcement Administration ("DEA certificate")
