Virginia Commonwealth University and Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center are seeking highly qualified PhD, MD, or MD/PhD funded investigators with research interests in the cancer field as broadly defined with preference given to those focusing on lipid and other cancer cell signaling and metabolism, chemical biology, tumor immunology and/or integrative genomics. These faculty positions are at the rank of Associate or Full Professor and could be tenure-eligible for qualified candidates. Appropriate academic department assignment will be based on the expertise and training of the candidate.
The VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancercenter that hosts 1000-plus researchers conducting basic, population,translational and clinical cancer research. Massey Cancer Center is dedicated to saving andimproving lives by discovering, developing, delivering and teaching effectivemeans to prevent, detect and treat cancer and to making those advancementsequally available to all.
Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center provides support for a variety of sharedresources including Flow Cytometry Shared Resource, Microscopy Core Laboratory,Cancer Mouse Models Core, Biostatistics Shared Resource, Cancer InformaticsCore, Clinical and Translational Research Laboratory, Tissue and Data Analysisand Acquisition Core Laboratory, and Transgenic/Knockout Shared Resource. Additionally, Massey Cancer Center has a comprehensive Clinical Trials Office that providesadministrative, regulatory, and nursing support for the clinical trialsconducted at the center.
Purpose: This position is a senior-level faculty position whowill play a key role in advancing the research mission and will be expected towork collaboratively with other members of the Massey Cancer Center so as toharness the considerable intellectual talent and scientific resources of VCUand focus them on solving the nation's cancer problem. The faculty member will serveas a basic science investigator with expertise in cancer cell signaling, lipidand other cancer-related metabolism, integrative genomics, tumor immunology, orchemical biology. They will also support the department with teachingresponsibilities at the graduate level and mentoring students and/or traineesas appropriate.
Responsibilities:
Teaching
The facultymember shares a deep commitment to effective instruction, training andmentoring of medical students, graduate students, undergraduate, andpost-doctoral fellows in the laboratory. They are expected to actively participate inproviding laboratory research opportunities to fellows and mentor juniorfaculty.
Research
Contribute to VCU'snational reputation through research and scholarship (extramural funding, highquality publications, citations, and national recognition as through honorificawards and committee leadership) and maintain active involvement in appropriatenational or international organizations and bodies. Publish in peer-reviewed journals and submitgrant applications for extramural funding in the field of Biochemistry,Molecular Biology, Genetic or Cancer Biology. Thefaculty member will establish and maintain a vigorous, extramurallyfunded research laboratory which focuses on on lipid and other cancer cellsignaling and metabolism, chemical biology, tumor immunology and/or integrativegenomics.
The faculty member isexpected to direct the research lab and comply with all regulatoryrequirements. They supervise laboratorypersonnel, write and submit multiple grant applications during the course ofthe academic year; write and publish multiple manuscripts during the course ofan academic year. They serve as a PI onpeer-reviewed grants and are responsible for complying with all institution andsponsors terms and conditions for grant funding.
The member will participatein Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center Core Grant application preparation as needed, thisincludes providing updates on active research, grants and publications. They participate and engage with other membersof the Massey Cancer Center in cancer center activities and in collaborativeresearch projects.

Required Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in basic, translational, or clinical sciences
- Extensive cancer relevant research experience
- Nationally-recognized scholarly/research portfolio with a strong track-record of continuous NCI funding
- Extensive publication experience
- Proven trainee and faculty mentorship skills
- Track record working in multi-disciplinary fields
- Experience in, and coordination of, collaborative grants and managing trans-disciplinary research
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a matrix environment within academic medicine
- Proven success in collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams
- Established track-record of leading inter- and multi-disciplinary teams as principal investigator of multi-investigator projects such as P01s and SPOREs
