OVERVIEW
The H&S Specialist is responsible for supporting health and safety at all divisions; Brampton Plant, Woodstock Plant, Field Erection and the Corporate office. The H&S Specialist is responsible for being physically present at all sites on a consistent basis. Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and the Company Health and Safety Roles and Responsibilities.

DETAILS
  • Facilitates high severity / high potential incident notification, and leads investigation, analysis, reporting, communication and response.
  • Monitors and assesses the quality of incident information and conformance to objectives and standards.
  • Monitors, facilitates, and maintains workers' compensation processes in liaison with third party consultant.
  • Facilitates implementation of the health, safety and environmental management systems.
  • Assesses, supports and creates the health, safety and environment management competency needs for the Business Units.
  • Advises and coaches Business Unit Leaders and employees about relevant legal developments, standards, methods and practices related to health, safety and environment management.
  • Facilitates and supports hazard identification and risk assessment analyses of hazardous work activities and action planning for the Business Units.
  • Conducts, analyzes and reports the results of health, safety and environmental inspections, assessments and audits to identify gaps and trends.
  • Conducts construction site inspections/audits to ensure conformance to construction regulations.
  • Ensures the effectiveness of emergency preparedness processes, contractor health and safety management, Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Leads, provides consultative and technical support to site Joint Health & Safety Committees by monitoring committee activities, status of committee issues to identify and respond to information and learning needs; advise committees of regulatory requirements and terms of reference.
  • Acts as a point of contact at individual sites for OHS inspectors to facilitate the execution of workplace tours and other activities related to external investigations and claims.
  • Other duties as required by Business Unit Leaders and Direct Manager.
PRIMARY INTERACTIONS
  • Interacts daily with Operations such as Plant Managers, Supervisors, and Front-Line employees.
  • Collaborates with Safety Specialists and Health and Safety Leaders in all market areas.
  • Liaises with local HR representatives as required.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
The recommended minimum technical background and experience for this position includes:
  • Minimum of 5 years health and safety experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in health and safety field or closely aligned science or engineering discipline.
  • Professional certification in Safety or Industrial Hygiene (CRSP or CIH) or in the process of certification.
  • Multi-site accountability experience is an asset.
COMPETENCIES and ABILITIES
  • Solid knowledge of health and safety regulatory requirements and concepts.
  • Good understanding of the health and safety issues, regulations, and technology which impact the manufacturing industry and best practices.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Deal effectively with internal and external customers.
