Squamish Nation consists of 23 villages and is comprised of descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal people who live in the present-day Greater Vancouver area, Gibson's Landing, and Squamish River watershed. The Squamish Nation has occupied and governed the territory since beyond recorded history. The Squamish Nation's culture is rich and resilient. We continue to practice our customs and traditions, which are strongly interconnected with our traditional territory. As an organization, we provide support to the greater Squamish Nation Community through service. With 12 departments with individual areas of expertise, we ensure Community Members have access to necessary programs and services.

About The Opportunity

Working as an integral part of the Nexwsyetsem Communications Department, this position reports directly to the Director of Communication, the Communications and Engagement Manager will be responsible for leading the Nation's communications and engagement team in the development, implementation and delivery of a communications and engagement strategy that supports the Squamish Nation's strategic objectives. In this role, the incumbent will lead a team of communicators to ensure consistent, effective and innovative communications to members as well as external stakeholders and partners. The incumbent will develop and oversee the overarching communications and engagement strategy to foster an identity and voice for the organization, and manage communications and engagement projects and initiatives that support the strategic priorities and action plan objectives of Squamish Nation. The incumbent will represent the organization to the community at large through the development and maintenance of relationships with key community groups, external agencies, and/or other interested parties. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in leadership, communications and engagement, media relations and issues management. The incumbent is highly analytical and adaptable, with the demonstrated ability to independently and skillfully manage multiple priorities and meet tight timelines in an ever-changing environment. The incumbent operates with a high level of tact, confidentiality, diplomacy, and integrity, and contributes to a positive and supportive team environment by working efficiently and professionally at all times. They operate with a consistently high degree of empathy and emotional intelligence, and are skillful at building and maintaining relationships.

What You Bring
  • Combination of education and experience.
  • A Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or other fields of study from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Works collaboratively with diverse stakeholders (internal and external) and understands the concepts of collective responsibility and ownership.
  • Use of analytical approach driven by data and metrics, with the ability to spot patterns and trends and adjust accordingly.
  • Handles sensitive issues with diplomacy and confidentiality providing recommendations and strategies to approach these issues and develop effective communications to support, ensuring the integrity of confidential and strategic information.
  • Demonstrates political acuity, analytical and judgment skills, and tact, as well as experience managing highly complex and politically sensitive files.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with a proven record of accomplishment in anticipating needs and demands at all levels of a project.
  • Adaptable, flexible, and agile; can adapt to complexity and work in an ever-changing environment with ease.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • High level of empathy, emotional intelligence, humility, and the capacity to give and receive feedback.
  • Understanding of issues affecting Indigenous communities.
  • Team-oriented with a tactful and approachable attitude and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Independent and self-motivated; demonstrates a strong ability to manage and execute their work.
  • Team player who leads by example and goes the extra mile to ensure projects are delivered within deadlines.

Salary: $ 100,477 - $ 114,179 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits program.
