Job Summary:
The Senior Loss Control Representative is responsible for evaluating and assessing risk exposures for commercial package and inland marine insurance clients and reports to the Head of Commercial Insurance. This position involves coaching an Underwriting Associate, conducting on-site inspections, analyzing safety practices, and making recommendations to mitigate risks. The role requires close collaboration with underwriters, agents, and policyholders to ensure effective risk management strategies are in place as we move into larger-value commercial properties and inland marine risks. The Senior Loss Control Representative will also serve as a subject matter expert on loss prevention and risk mitigation strategies, helping shape underwriting decisions and client outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Risk Assessment & Inspection:
    • Conduct detailed risk assessments for commercial package and inland marine insurance clients, including physical on-site inspections and virtual assessments.
    • Help establish risk assessment guidelines for outsourced inspections and audit reports to ensure compliance with quality standards.
    • Evaluate property, equipment, operations, and safety practices to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement.
    • Review liability exposures to ensure safety practices and quality standards are in place to mitigate potential hazards and to improve overall risk mitigation efforts.
    • Assess risk factors related to inland marine exposures, such as transportation, storage, and construction-related risks.
  • Loss Prevention & Risk Mitigation:
    • Develop and recommend practical loss prevention and risk control measures to reduce the likelihood of loss or damage and to ensure risk mitigation recommendations are implemented.
    • Provide guidance on safety improvements, regulatory compliance, and hazard management for commercial and inland marine accounts.
    • Assist clients in implementing risk mitigation programs, including employee safety training and emergency preparedness plans.
  • Reporting & Documentation:
    • Prepare comprehensive risk reports that outline findings, recommendations, and risk ratings for underwriters and agents.
    • Document inspection results, including photos, diagrams, and detailed descriptions of risk exposures.
    • Maintain up-to-date records of client risk profiles and loss control activities.
  • Collaboration & Client Engagement:
    • Work closely with underwriters to ensure alignment between risk assessments and insurance coverage, providing detailed risk insights to guide decision-making.
  • Collaborate with insurance agents and brokers to communicate risk control recommendations and support policyholder engagement.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for high-value clients, offering expert advice on safety and risk management best practices.
  • Training & Development:
    • Mentor and train junior loss control representatives on risk assessment methodologies and industry standards.
    • Stay current on trends, regulations, and best practices in the commercial package and inland marine insurance, sharing knowledge with team members and clients.
  • Compliance & Industry Standards:
    • Ensure all loss control activities comply with applicable regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
    • Monitor changes in insurance regulations, construction codes, and industry-specific safety standards that may affect risk exposures.

Qualifications:
  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in risk management, insurance, engineering, or a related field (preferred).
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in loss control or risk management, with a focus on commercial packaging and inland marine insurance.
    • Strong knowledge of small commercial or lower middle market customer exposures, and inland marine risks, including construction equipment, transportation, and goods in transit
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Proven ability to conduct thorough on-site inspections and assessments of complex commercial risks.
    • Expertise in risk mitigation techniques for property and inland marine exposures.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify risk exposures and provide actionable recommendations.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively engage with clients, underwriters, and agents.
    • Proficiency in loss control software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Certifications:
    • CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ARM (Associate in Risk Management), or equivalent professional designation (preferred).

Work Environment:
  • Extensive travel may be required for on-site inspections.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple clients and projects.
