Coordinates the dissemination of messages regarding the status of service and the impacts of service disruptions that are ultimately delivered to customers through various communications channels, including travel alerts, NJ TRANSIT Website, hotline(s), station public address announcements, onboard announcements, etc.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Monitors proper utilization and maintenance of passenger equipment to meet service requirements of daily rail commuter service, a.m. and p.m.
- Directs, manages and coordinates the activities of Senior Trainmasters, and indirectly, Train Serviceemployees in all phases of train operations in conformance with NJ TRANSIT, FRA, NORAC rulesand regulations to ensure compliance with federally mandated Passenger Conductor Certification program.
- Manages the collection, accounting and auditing policy of train service employees and ticket agents toensure adherence to Rail Operations Revenue Policies.
- Supervises and directs staff, dispatchers, mechanical personnel, to assure adherence and compliance withall operating and safety rules, and state and federal regulations.
- Represents Line management at project, schedule and other meetings.
- Responds to service disruptions; takes control when appropriate to mitigate impact to passengers.
- Monitors the performance of Train Service employees by riding trains and making observations, as wellas reviewing observations made by Senior Trainmasters and Platform Trainmasters.
- Set monthly schedule for Senior Trainmasters and Platform Trainmasters to ensure there is proper supervisory coverage daily.
Education, Experience and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus eight (8) years progressive experience in railroad transportation operations, to include supervisory experience.
- Supervisory experience comprise of coordinating the activities and schedules of Trainmen, monitoring compliance testing and terminal operations, delegating and inspecting work assignments of employees, providing coaching and guidance to employees, conducting performance evaluations-providing counseling and discipline when necessary, managing time and attendance, assisting with department hiring initiatives, providing employee training and development, and ensuring that all safety rules and policies are followed.
- An associate degree in Transportation, Business Administration, or Public Administration from a US Department of Education accredited college or university can be substituted for two (2) years of required experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of railroad operations, including, but not limited to, FRA regulations and requirements for the operation and movement of trains, maintenance of way, transportation and mechanical required.
- Must be proficient in reading and interpreting regulations, and procedures.
- Must have good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to manage emergency situations as well as make independent judgements using sound reasoning and knowledge.
Other Conditions
- Required to be on-call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and available to work off hours, weekends and extended hours during major events as required to support Rail Transportation operational needs.
