JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Special Services - Area 1, the Behavior Analyst provides management and supervision of training, and specialized consultative services in the area of behavior analysis and positive behavioral supports. Also provides direct and indirect service to special needs students who have been diagnosed with severe behavioral disabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develops and implements district-wide, ongoing training for appropriate staff in the area of positive behavior supports and behavior analysis.
  • Provides training to special education teachers, general education teachers, and para-educators regarding specialized instructional methods and best practices from a recognized research base.
  • Works to build skills and abilities at school sites to functionally assess, collect and graph behavioral data, and write effective behavior plans.
  • Provides in-service opportunities for parents regarding effective behavioral management in specialized cases.
  • Creates and/or assists in functional behavior assessments as well as behavior intervention plans.
  • Develops specialized instructional methods with teachers.
  • Assists teachers and paraprofessionals in providing instruction to students using specialized instructional methods.
  • Observes students in a general education setting and special education setting and provides feedback to staff in all school settings in their efforts to functionally assess and write effective behavior plans, maintain records, materials, equipment and other supplies.
  • Remains current with approaches, methodology and research in the field to foster professional growth and educationally related practices.
  • Coordinates student case staffing weekly, assists Special Education Area Administrator with oversight and management of behavior assistants' assignments in order to provide effective and timely behavioral consultation and support at school sites.
  • Assist with the supervision and evaluation of behavior assistants assigned to the program.
  • Effectively balances the role of district-wide training in behavior analysis and positive behavioral supports with the provision of more specialized consultation on a case-by-case basis.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Basic behavior analytic principles and application; functional behavior analysis and implementation of behavior plans; knowledge of the varied characteristics of at-risk students, and assessments used to diagnose students with behavioral concerns; files and records management, office procedures, and basic computer literacy.

SKILLED AT:
Communicating effectively both orally and in writing; working collaboratively with certified and classified personnel at various locations; implementing specialized instructional methods; developing goals and objectives for students with behavioral concerns; implementing individual structured activities; effectively managing, supervising, and assigning staff and or resources within the department; maintaining accurate and complete records, files, and reports, and interacting effectively with all individuals contacted during the course of work; matching teacher style and student style to the management program in conjunction with home programs; using counseling techniques to defuse potentially stressful/explosive situation with students, staff and/or parents.

ABILITY TO:

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Perform related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Special Services - Area 1, who will annually evaluate the performance of the Behavior Analyst. The employee is expected to exercise initiative and judgment in planning and organizing work, completing assignments and handling routine and unusual problems. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports for results achieved and shall be evaluated at least annually.

WORK CONTACTS
Frequent contact with teachers, students, parents, district staff, and other school personnel is required. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL/INTELLECTUAL REQUIREMENTS The physical and mental/intellectual requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Those requirements include:
  • Strength, dexterity, and coordination to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. Sedentary to heavy exertion of force involving 10-25 pounds frequently with up to 50 pounds occasionally. May involve negligible up to significant stand/walk/push/pull/carry. May involve climbing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Mobility to work in a typical classroom setting and use standard classroom equipment. The ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively, and exchange information accurately with all internal and external members of the school community.

CONDITIONS OF WORK
Work is performed under the following conditions: Exposure to climate controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods. May involve work in crowded environments.
Hazards: Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).

EMPLOYEE PUNCTUALITY AND APPEARANCE
In order for DCSD schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave. Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator. All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of DCSD and is appropriate for their position.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of education/experience that could likely provide the required knowledge in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • Certification by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. preferred
  • A PhD degree, which includes graduate work in special education, behavior analysis, and closely related fields and equivalent training and/or experience and behavior management and educational interventions; consultation and program development experience; workshop design and presentation skills; and school site experience desired.
  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid State of Nevada driver's license.

  • Certification by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. Preferrd
