Auburn University at Montgomery, Department of Kinesiology, invites applications for Department Chair to begin August 2025 or earlier, based on availability. The department chair position is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with a usual course load of four courses per academic year.

The Department of Kinesiology offers graduate programs in Exercise Science, Physical Education Teacher Education and Sport Management. Under the direction of the Dean and in collaboration with faculty, the department chair will provide strategic and visionary leadership for the department and engage in activities that support the university's mission, vision, and core values.

  • strengths in undergraduate and graduate teaching, including online teaching,
  • excellence in scholarship and research as evidenced by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications,

  • excellent written and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences.


The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in kinesiology, including exercise science, physical education, or closely related field with an academic background and appropriate credentials to be a tenured professor in an academic department in the College of Education at Auburn University at Montgomery.

The department chair's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • communicating and implementing college and university policies to the department, and advocating for departmental needs to the college and university,
  • encouraging and supporting good teaching, scholarly activity, and professional development within the department,
  • planning and executing a strategic direction for the department, building and staffing the schedule of classes, overseeing the department budget and other resources, fostering team building, managing the department and its staff, working with diverse faculty and students in the department and across campus to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with external entities,
  • working with the faculty to develop and review standards, curricula, and procedures, which provide adequate preparation of graduates for professional or further academic endeavor, and
  • leading student recruitment and retention efforts and ensuring department majors are appropriately advised.
