The Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Sciences (DAFRS) invites resumes for a twelve month, full-time, granted funded position. The grant funding for this position expires in July, 2028. There is a possibility of extending the position if external support is obtained. The director will oversee all CUF projects and establish UMES as a regional leader in urban forestry.

Salary and Benefits Information:

Salary: $78,000

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of the UMES Center for Urban Forestry (CUF), including establishment of a campus arboretum and grow-out station, outreach/networking, and other efforts to elevate UMES's role in regional urban forestry.
  • Lead all CUF forestry projects.
  • Develop an urban forestry presence in the community by building trust, buy-in, and cooperation with community entities and overseeing externally funded community projects.
  • Work with the program director to identify and obtain external funding and manage funding requirements.
  • Assist with the instruction and development of urban forestry education modules to strengthen UMES's urban forestry education.
  • Collaborate with UMES faculty and staff to establish and achieve a strategic plan for CUF.
  • Manage budgets, reporting, and developing new initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Post-Graduate degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, natural resources, or related field.
  • Grant writing and management, including transforming grant deliverables into impactful actions.
  • Involvement in the implementation of public outreach and/or extension projects.
  • Working knowledge of urban forestry.


Preferred Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Strong communication skills: superior written and oral communication skills,
  • Ability to interact and work with a variety of audiences, including but not limited to arborists, officials, volunteers, contractors, and the public
  • Budgeting ability to formulate and adhere to project budgets
  • Competent in the use of forestry related software (GIS, i-Tree, etc.)
  • Ability to track records for managing multiple complex projects,
  • Skilled in handling tasks with diplomacy, tenacity, patience, and a drive for results.
