Job Description
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an experienced, engaged, and inclusive leader from the UAB community to chair the Department of Chemistry.
This Chair will be instrumental in:
It is important that this person continues to excel professionally and serve as a model as it relates to research, instruction, mentoring, and service. They should have the capacity and vision to advance the department of chemistry by anticipating new areas for research and teaching, and demonstrating knowledge, interest, and concern in all areas currently represented in the department. In addition to leadership in research, the successful candidate should have a vision to support the professional development of Non-Tenure-Earning (NTE) faculty, which make up a meaningful portion of the department. Successful applicants should hold the rank of Full Professor (with tenure) or be eligible to be appointed to that rank upon hire.
Applications should include a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three professional references. References will not be contacted without permission of the applicants, and formal letters of reference will be requested for finalist applicants only. The cover letter should include brief (no more than one paragraph each) discussion on the applicant's (a) reasons for being interested in this position, (b) most significant leadership experience and leadership style, research interests and major accomplishments, (d) teaching and mentoring philosophy, experience, and recognitions, and (e) key service contributions to your institution and scientific community. The UAB Chemistry Department offers B.S. (ACS-approved), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and has major research interests in drug discovery, organic chemistry, structural biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, radiochemistry, nanoscience, and polymer/advanced materials. UAB has outstanding core facilities in the molecular sciences (including EM, MS, and X-ray), engineering, nanoscience, imaging (both preclinical and clinical), informatics, as well as translational and clinical research. The incoming Chair should have and clearly communicate a strategic vision for how to integrate existing resources with identified needs to advance the growth and competitiveness of the department on regional and national scales.
