Job Summary

The Director, Clinical Applications plans, develops, articulates, implements, monitors, and maintains the business and administrative aspects of the electronic health record and clinical information systems across UCSF Health and its affiliates, and serves as a consultant and partner on the effective use of clinical information systems across these customers. The incumbent participates with other operational leaders to execute on the strategic plans and objectives of UCSF Health and the research, teaching, and patient care missions of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. The role facilitates alignment with other leaders in Clinical Systems, Information Technology, and Digital Health to ensure that the organization's missions and strategic objectives are enabled and advanced by its information systems. The Director, Clinical Applications oversees execution of a portfolio of major, complex, and strategically important projects across the enterprise. This role represents the health system in systemwide, state, and national meetings and other forums. The Director, Clinical Applications, makes decisions on business applications matters and ensures achievements of objectives. S/he/they develops and sustains business application systems that are in compliance with organizational goals, values, and mission. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and serious delays in achieving objectives and goals.

Key Functions of this role include:
  • Oversight of Clinical Application implementations
  • Epic clinical application management including roadmap development
  • Oversight of overall Clinical Application business continuity/support and downtime preparedness
  • Clinical Application analytics
  • Clinical Research functionality in the EHR
  • Team development
  • Partnership with Architecture, Design, and Solutions teams
  • Budgetary management
  • Liaison to Clinical Digital Innovation Programs (Patient Flow, New Patient Acquisition, etc.)
  • Oversight of Finance Application/Project Portfolios

This position is classified as Flexible for onsite work requirements.
  • This role allows partial or full days of remote work. Job duties require intermittent physical presence at a UCSF or affiliate location, for specific categories of activities. Onsite presence is expected to be approximately 2-3 days most weeks, but certain activities may require employee to be in the office for more extended periods.
  • Onsite activities may include, but are not limited to, executive meetings, collaboration meetings, customer meetings, team-building events, go-live readiness activities and support, 1:1 meetings, and team meetings.
  • A designated workspace will be assigned only in cases where employee comes to the office at least 4 days/week or for other documented physical or ergonomic special requirements. Hoteling options will be provided at our major team locations at Mission Center Building and Shattuck Street (Oakland). Job duties may require presence at additional UCSF and affiliate locations. The home office will be located at 1855 Folsom Street, San Francisco.
  • Employee will be responsible for commuting expenses. Expenses to a location other than the assigned primary office location may be reimbursable to the extent that they exceed the employee's standard commute and follow UCSF policy.
  • Due to the variable nature of our work, employee may be requested to report to the office with 4 business hours of notice. Business hours are defined as 0800-1700 PT Monday-Friday.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $138,400 - $335,800 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training
  • 5-7 years clinical application leadership experience
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical applications concepts, policies, and practices, including planning, design, development, testing, integrations of software and systems, programming, and training and support methodologies
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare information technology, medical terminology and leading clinical information systems
  • In-depth and comprehensive understanding of clinical applications and integration with clinical processes and workflows
  • Able to work across multiple locations throughout the health system and affiliates, including occasional travel to other UCs or national conferences and user groups
  • Excellent skills in developing strategic plans, evaluating and developing staff competencies, organizing operations, and fiscal management. Includes experience implementing large technology projects in healthcare settings. Proven ability to manage concurrent implementations
  • Excellent communications skills to convey complex information clearly and concisely to all levels of staff and management, with the ability to motivate, influence, and persuade others, and cultivate a strong commitment to efficiency, functionality, and quality customer service
  • Strong writing ability for both complex technical as well as narrative work
  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork and collaboration across departments for effective problem solving, conflict resolution, support for organizational values, and consistent achievement of objectives
  • Excellent ability to collaborate with senior management and executive-level staff, to develop and implement objectives, goals, budgets, strategic plans, policies, and priorities, and to measure and evaluate operations in conjunction with them
  • Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills, to quickly troubleshoot problems, and develop and apply analytics to identify and implement successful solutions. Possesses operational expertise, business management, and planning skills to integrate clinical technology with business requirements and drive operational execution


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and understanding of interdependencies of functional departments and groups within the health system and external partners
  • Master's degree in health management, technology, public health, or related discipline
  • Prior Epic Certification in at least one clinical module

Clinical Systems and Health Informatics are responsible for all aspects of the clinical and business software applications of UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates, and community partners. This includes the Electronic Health Record (APeX), which supports the clinical, revenue cycle, and clinical operational functions of the health system and its affiliates, and approximately 95 other software applications involved in patient care and operations.
