Position Description

Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represents the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions

Oversees the daily operations of the coding/billing functions of the School of Medicine Medical Practice Income Plan (MPIP) Business Office. Ensures that Revenue Cycle budget targets and performance goals are achieved. Working under the supervision of the Managing Director of the MPIP Business Office and in collaboration with clinical department senior leadership, develops short- and long-range plans with a focus on continuous improvement. Establishes and implements policies and procedures. Develops, implements, and maintains efficient processes, coding/auditing compliance plans, and coding education for staff. Identifies growth opportunities.
  • Organizes and directs the day-to-day operations for Coding & Reimbursement Specialists and administrative personnel.
    • Recruits, hires, and evaluates staff performance.
    • Manage staff schedules and payroll to ensure consistent and adequate coverage.
    • Coaches and trains staff to help ensure coding accuracy, efficiency and timeliness to include routinely conducting internal coding audits.
    • Communicates effectively with staff and leadership.
    • Provides coding backup as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with leadership to develop and implement measurable goals and plans to meet budgeted revenue targets, optimize staff productivity/charge entry lag and ensure coding accuracy.
    • Disseminates progress towards goals to staff and leadership. Provides support and redirection as needed.
  • Stays abreast of industry coding regulations and changes that impact coding and billing patterns. Serves as a subject matter expert for the organization on coding/billing functions as applicable.
    • Exhibits the knowledge and ability to follow organizational Billing Compliance policies and procedures, coding industry standards and Medicare billing and auditing guidelines.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years of coding and reimbursement experience, preferably in a multi-specialty physician group and/or academic health care setting.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience strongly preferred.


Pay Statement

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan. For additional information, please reference the institutional pay plan website.
