HOMETOWN Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center that offers medical, dental, & behavioral health services, has an immediate opening for a Dentist at our Dexter location. With offices located in Newport, Pittsfield, Dover-Foxcroft & Dexter, our experienced and compassionate staff strive to provide each and every patient with individual attention, thoughtfulness, and kindness.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Dentist diagnoses and treats problems with a patient's teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth; also provides advice and instruction on taking care of teeth and gums and on diet choices that affect oral health; provides dental services to general public patients with diverse cultural and socioeconomic back grounds.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides high-quality dental health care to all who request services, including assessment and treatment; performs basic dentistry services including, but not limited to: extractions, restorations, impressions, x-rays and oral exams.
  • Promotes patient education for good dental health, including preventative care and smoking cessation counseling for patients.
  • Provides referrals for specialty care, case management and hygienist care as appropriate.
  • Encourages appropriate services through written treatment plans and referrals or recall.
  • Documents patients' clinical charts, including treatment plans.
  • Functions effectively as member of dental clinic team with appropriate day-to-day clinical direction; oversees and mentors dental students as assigned.
  • Attends required staff meetings and, as requested, participates in program planning.
  • Complies with and shares in implementation of all OSHA safety and infection control requirements.
  • Conforms to the terms of employment contract, all grant and funding conditions, and any relevant agreements between the Health Center and other entities.
  • Maintains knowledge in the dental field, and stays current on all required training for licensure.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and sit; prolonged standing is required. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel, dental instruments, as well as operation of a standard computer keyboard; reach with hands and arms and talk, see and hear. Eye hand coordination and finger and manual dexterity required. The employee must regularly lift/move up to 25 pounds, including assist with moving patients, as well as bend, stoop, stretch or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work has frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a dental practice setting; work is performed in a busy dental office environment and involves frequent contact with staff, patients, and the public. Work may be stressful at times. At times, must interact with irate patients and remain calm and professional. Working extended hours may be required as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED FOR POSITION:

Experience and Skill Requirements: The following experience and skills are considered essential:
  • Prior experience as a licensed dentist strongly preferred. Clinical and public health experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all aspects of basic dentistry services and to work as a team member.
  • Computer experience using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office software products required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other patients, others employees and the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong commitment to public health dentistry.
  • Ability to read, interprets, and applies dental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  • Ability to establish priorities and coordinate work activities.

Education Requirements: The following education requirements are considered essential:
  • Advanced Degree from accredited School of Dentistry.
  • Licensed Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) required.
  • Licensed as a Dentist in the State of Maine.
  • Valid DEA license to prescribe narcotics.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of family dentistry.
  • Knowledge of the state and federal laws pertaining to Dentistry and to community health centers.
  • Will have up-to-date training and certification in Healthcare Providers Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association, American Red Cross or American Health and Safety Institute. Must obtain within 3 months if not current at hire.
