The target hiring range for this position will be between $78,482 - $87,500 per year . Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director, the Associate Director for Scholar Services is the leader of Northwestern's scholar services team. They will serve as the Responsible Officer (RO) for the Department of State and Designated School Official (DSO), support and help manage three staff members, file employment-based petitions and process J-1 cases, advise F and J students, manage the scholar database and assist in the design and implementation of departmental training. They will oversee and manage employment/scholar visa and legal permanent residency cases for the McCormick School of Engineering, Bienen School of Music, Medill, NUIT, School of Communication, School of Education and Social Policy, Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, NU-Q, Northwestern Buffett, Central Administration Offices (Athletics, the Libraries, Block Museum) and other units across the University.

Specific Responsibilities :
  • Responsible for analysis and interpretation of relevant employment-based immigration, Department of Labor and Department of State regulations; provides detailed analysis to departments and makes decisions on eligibility, institutional compliance and how best to prepare cases for filing with the Department of Labor, United States Citizenship and Immigration Service and Department of Statue, which includes: H-1B, J-1, TN, E-3, B-1 & Legal Permanent Resident cases.
  • Liaises with university departments on a regular basis through ongoing communication and quarterly meetings with department contacts; conducts yearly service and satisfaction assessment.
  • Acts as a resource for scholar advisers in OISS by providing detailed analysis and interpretation of employment and other immigration regulations and driving policy and tactical strategy. Meets with advisers on a weekly basis to discuss policy and tactics.
  • Manages multiple databases including J-1 SEVIS alerts, and communicating these to advisers, departments and beneficiary.
  • Oversees the design and development of comprehensive social, recreational and cultural adjustment seminars/workshops for scholars and their dependents; provides information on community resources and maintains web-based information.
  • Directs the development of training programs utilizing web-based and in-person formats for departments and scholars on policy and procedures for filing employment-based petitions and non-immigrant categories.
  • Prepares detailed annual statistical data and annual programming report for the Department of State
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of three FTEs

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in any field with three years of experience in filing H-1B, J-1, TN, E-3 and Legal Permanent Resident status in a major research university setting. Experience must include database management.

  • Master's degree in any field and two years of experience in filing H-1B, J-1, TN E-3 and Legal Permanent Resident cases
