Overview

The Senior Estimator is responsible for the development of cost estimates and proposals related to the engineering and manufacturing of nuclear power plant components. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of mechanical hardware, nuclear industry requirements, and the ability to read and interpret customer and internal drawings. The Senior Estimator will create detailed cost estimates with plans to build hardware, including bills of material, assembly sequencing, and labor estimates, while ensuring compliance with nuclear procurement and Quality Assurance requirements and meeting customer expectations for turnaround time of requests. This is a full-time with benefits and is a hybrid role based in Alexandria, VA, with approximately 20% travel required. Salary is commensurate with experience, capabilities, and performance. The Senior Estimator reports to the NuSource Director of Business Development.

Duties/Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of this position are:
  • Scope and Cost Estimation: Develop and prepare accurate, timely cost estimates for proposals including labor, materials, and subcontractor costs.
  • Collaborate with Internal Teams: Work with other departments to define the scope of work, technical requirements, cost, and schedule.
  • Provide the completed quote to the Business Development Specialist for completion of the proposal for internal approval and delivery to the customer.
  • Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation: Analyze customer and internal drawings, for mechanical hardware.
  • Specification Analysis: Interpret customer specifications, procurement engineering requirements, and Quality requirements to ensure compliance with nuclear industry regulations.
  • Vendor Coordination: Develop and manage requests for proposals (RFPs) to be sent to prospective vendors who will be subcontracted for portions of the work.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Project Managers to ensure alignment with capabilities.
  • Customer Interaction: Address customer questions and clarify project details as needed.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and capabilities:
  • College degree (Bachelor of Science) in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • 5-7 years in nuclear projects or estimating, including quoting and cost development for complex fabrication or construction.
  • Strong knowledge of nuclear industry quality requirements, including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and NQA-1 standards.
  • Experience in fabricating mechanical hardware such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, valves, and custom components.
  • Familiarity with Commercial Grade Dedication, material testing, and reverse engineering.
  • Expertise in manufacturing processes and cost development for nuclear mechanical hardware and engineering projects.
  • Understanding of components such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, valves, and custom hardware, including non-destructive testing and inspection requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with machining, welding, mechanical assembly, and reverse engineering, including knowledge of fabrication methods.
  • Skilled in using project management and scheduling software (e.g., MS Project) and MS Office (Excel, Word) to manage timelines and resource allocation effectively.
  • Strong ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to manage complex projects.
  • Ability to learn quickly and respond/ react quickly to changing priorities.
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Good interpersonal skills dealing with a wide range of individuals.
  • Strong written communication skills required.
  • Persistent, questioning attitude.
