GENERAL SUMMARY:

Provides supervision and management of advanced practice providers (APPs) in the surgical clinical service line. Provides clinical direction and education, works closely with operational and physician leaders, and has oversight of hiring, termination, and professional growth and development of APPs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Devotes 50% effort with direct patient care.
  • Provides clinical and administrative oversight and leadership to surgical APPs.
  • Directs the clinical, operational and administrative initiatives within the surgical service line.
  • Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with the staff APPs.
  • Ensures clinical competency and adherence to policy through practice analysis and case review of APPs with physicians.
  • Investigates and responds to patient/family concerns or complaints.
  • Coordinates orientation for newly hired APPs.
  • Provides education to support the knowledge base and growth of APPs.
  • Participates in hospital-wide committees where applicable.
  • Ensures all operational, internal and external legal/regulatory, internal/externa mandates and initiatives are completed.
  • Reviews and participates in financial planning for the service line.
  • Participates in the hiring, evaluation, coaching, mentoring, and corrective action of staff APPs.
  • Investigates and resolves operational issues.
  • Coordinates quality improvement/process improvement programs.
  • Provides 24-hour administrator on-call coverage for the service line.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of the APPs.
  • Ensures compliance and participation in Medical Staff Services initiatives, policies and procedures.
  • Remains informed of and advocates for practice models that allow APPs to practice to the fullest extent of their scope of practice.
  • Participates in regional and national discussions that affect APP practice.
  • Works with BSA finance and billing departments in regards to funding/billing/reimbursement models.
  • Works with BPI Human Resources for recruitment of APPs.
  • Participates in the legislative and health policy issues affecting advanced practice.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education Qualifications
  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's or Doctorate Degree in Nursing or other healthcare-related field from an accredited university.
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's degree or Physician Assistant license/certification.


Experience Qualifications
  • Five or more years of APP experience preferred.
  • Two-three years of management/oversight of APP staff management required.

  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to promote a spirit of inquiry and practice based on evidence by using research- based knowledge or research utilization methods to identify and implement innovations in patient care and/or participating in research, clinical investigatory or quality projects.
  • Ability to use educational strategies to influence the development of staff and the provision of quality care for patients and families.
  • Communicate effectively in many venues from individual 1-on-1 sessions to a large audience.
  • Recognize/reward or counsel staff.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Conduct efficient and supportive process improvement activities.
  • Contribute positively, proactively, and adeptly in institution-wide and Center of Advanced Practice initiatives.


Licenses and Certifications

Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant RI State Licensure.
