Position Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Idaho is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Microelectronics. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong program in the following area while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, advising, and research.

Key Area of Interest:
  • Analog, Mixed Signal, and RF/Microwave Microelectronics: Emphasis on design, fabrication, testing, and application of analog and mixed signal microelectronics. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in design, fabrication, and testing of microelectronic hardware and should demonstrate expertise in the software used to simulate microelectronic circuitry.


Exceptional candidates with strong potential in other areas of Electrical Engineering will also be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:
The candidate will be expected to balance teaching, advising, research, and service responsibilities, making significant contributions in each area:

1. Teaching: Deliver high-quality instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including developing and teaching core and elective courses in subjects within Electrical Engineering pertinent to analog and mixed signal microelectronics. The candidate should employ innovative teaching methods, integrate current research into the curriculum, and be committed to continuous improvement in teaching effectiveness.

2. Mentoring and Advising: Provide academic and career guidance to a diverse group of students. This includes supervising undergraduate and graduate research projects, advising student organizations, and actively participating in student recruitment and retention initiatives. The candidate will also serve on graduate committees and contribute to students' professional development.

3. Research: Establish a robust research program in one or more of the specified areas, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. The candidate will be expected to secure external funding from federal and industry sources, publish in high-quality venues, and contribute to the university's strategic research initiatives, including those influenced by the CHIPS Act.

4. Service: Engage in service activities within the department, college, and university, as well as professional service to the academic community. This includes participating in committee work, curriculum development, and outreach efforts to enhance the visibility and impact of the department's educational and research programs.

The ideal candidate will exhibit strong potential for multidisciplinary collaboration in both research and educational projects, contributing to the overall mission of the University of Idaho.

Teaching & Advising: 50% This is the equivalent of teaching two courses per semester. (25% in the first three years; this is equivalent to teaching approximately one course per semester)

Scholarship & Creative Activity: 45% (approximately 70% in the first three years only)
Outreach & Extension: 0%
University Leadership & Service: 5%

Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.

Required Qualifications
  • Earned Baccalaureate and Doctorate degrees in Electrical Engineering with an analog or mixed signal microelectronics engineering emphasis.
  • Oral and written communication skills suitable for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in teaching and research.
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain the Idaho Professional Engineering (P.E.) License within five years of starting employment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with an analog or mixed signal microelectronics engineering emphasis.
  • Proven potential for excellence in both research and teaching within Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses in Electrical Engineering
  • Relevant industry experience is highly desirable.
