The primary functions of the Global Senior Director of Finance are to ensure the integrity of our Oceana's finances, employ sound financial practices, develop, and deploy all necessary systems, policies, and procedures, provide information and data to leadership, and provide effective management to the F&A team. Extensive systems experience maximizing their capabilities to improve efficiency and produce needed information is a key success factor for this role.

The Senior Director role requires extensive management and mentoring experience in the areas of accounting, grants, budgeting, and financial analysis. In addition, expertise in Workday Adaptive Planning is a key requirement for this role. The position is 3 days a week in the office, hybrid role based in Washington, DC.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Financial leadership: Provide leadership and manage staff across all finance, accounting and grant management and financial reporting functions. Develop and lead a team of professionals directing their efforts toward Oceana's sustainability, efficiency, and effectiveness. Ensure goals are set monitored and achieved; and actively mentor and develop the skills of the team

Finance & Accounting Policies, Practices & Systems: Serve as the business owner for all finance-related systems. Identify process and system requirements and options that best meet Oceana's needs. Work closely with IT to evaluate, select, and oversee implementation and effective utilization of systems (such as Workday Adaptive Planning) to meet requirements. Develop and implement standard policies and practices in accordance with GAAP. Ensure documentation is in place for core processes. Create and operationalize plans for improving functions and processes.

Metrics and reporting: Identify appropriate metrics and produce reports to give management the information needed to make sound financial decisions. Analyze and interpret the data to simplify decision making for management. Oversee the production and analysis of Board/donor reports.

Budgeting and forecasting: Identify and implement changes to improve Oceana's budgeting process. Steer the annual and long-term budgeting processes. Ensure budgets are created, managed, and monitored. Forecast major sources of revenue and expense to inform short and long-term decisions. Recommend corrective action to the CFO when conditions warrant.

Systems utilization: Apply Workday Adaptive Planner knowledge to create the appropriate tools and information to support robust budget and other reporting solutions. Act as the Subject Matter Expert on Workday implementation.

Advice and training: Provide financial advice and guidance to organizational leaders, country vice presidents and office administrators to help them become good financial managers who can use and understand financial reports and make revenue and expense forecasts. Ensure appropriate training is in place to inform all employees about Oceana's fiscal policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:

Education and work experience:
  • Graduate degree in Finance or Accounting and CPA required.
  • External Auditor experience required.
  • Ten plus (10+) years of progressive financial management experience
  • Seven plus (7+) years of supervisory experience
  • Experience effectively leading in a global organization through change
  • Prior F & A non-profit and for-profit experience required
  • Fluency in speaking and writing in English is required and Spanish is a plus

Skills and knowledge:
  • Function as both a strategic and hands-on lead. Ability to maneuver effectively between strategic high-level executive advisory hands-on management.
  • Demonstrated experience thinking and acting systematically to identify and solve problems.
  • Excellent track record in financial and risk management and able to rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Experience implementing technology that has improved financial management, efficiency, and/or accuracy. Experience extracting data resulting in robust data, leading to good decision making.

  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills including the ability to explain technical issues in plain language and to clearly document and communicate policies and procedures.

The salary range for this position is $170,000 - 200,000 annually.
