Summary
The Island County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking a full-time Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. Our team of criminal prosecutors, paralegals, and staff are dedicated to protecting the public, seeking justice in every case, and maintaining public confidence in the skills and judgment of the office. The Chief Criminal Deputy reports directly to the elected Prosecuting Attorney and serves at the pleasure of the Prosecuting Attorney. This employee is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Criminal Division of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office. He or she assists the elected Prosecuting Attorney in the formulation, interpretation, and enforcement of office policies, including charging and disposition standards, ethical standards, personnel policies, hiring, discipline, and carrying out all other policies relevant to the office's criminal justice duties.
In addition to his or her supervisory and policy duties, the Chief Criminal Deputy is expected to carry an active criminal caseload and fulfill any other duties that might be expected of a criminal DPA as needed. It is expected that the caseload of the Chief would be smaller than that of other senior DPAs.

Job Duties
- Perform all tasks that may be required of the Prosecuting Attorney in the fulfillment of the office's duties to seek justice and prosecute crimes committed in Island County.
- Develop and enforce policies and procedures to ensure efficient, competent, and ethical practice by all members of the Criminal Division.
- Ensure that all attorneys and staff in the Criminal Division are properly trained and supervised.
- Mentor junior attorneys and staff to provide opportunities for continuous professional growth.
- Act as primary liaison between the Prosecuting Attorney's Office and law enforcement, courts, and other criminal justice agencies.
- Perform other tasks as directed.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The ideal successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:
- At least 12 years of criminal litigation experience, including the handling of progressively more complex and serious cases.
- Experience supervising and mentoring attorneys and non-attorney staff.
- Experience in committees or other policy-related work in the arenas of public safety and/or criminal justice.
- Experience handling appeals and post-conviction collateral attacks.
- Superior legal research skills.
- Superior oral and written communication abilities.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative and intense environment.
- Fluency with digital office management tools and processes.
Education, Experience & Certifications
- Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree
- Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school, unless admitted to practice law through APR 6.
- Current membership in good standing in the Washington State Bar Association.
- Valid Washington driver's license and proof of auto insurance.
