11/25/2024The Assistant Director of Transportation supports the Director in overseeing all operational areas of the Transportation Department, including Routing, Dispatch, and Shop, to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services. This role involves supervising and training staff, managing safety protocols, coordinating accident investigations, overseeing route assignments, maintaining public relations, and supporting budget and maintenance planning. Additionally, the Assistant Director collaborates with schools to address student management needs, facilitates funding reports, and may represent the department in committees and public engagements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Assists in the supervision of all functions/areas of the Transportation Department, including areas of Routing, Dispatch, and Shop to maximize operational efficiencies. Assists in the development and implementation of organizational' structures and appropriate procedures to ensure quality service while maintaining the best use of resources.
2. Oversees the bus driver safety and training program in accordance with Washington State and Federal guidelines.
3. Maintains driver and safety training records as required by State and Federal regulations and District policies, including random drug screening.
4. Oversees the accident and injury response and investigation process, including but not limited to, leading the Accident Review Committee and related tasks/responsibilities.
5. Supervises, coaches, and evaluates performance of Bus Drivers, Bus Assistants, and other staff as assigned.
6. Assists in the establishment and assignment of efficient regular and special education bus routes, schedules, and stops.
7. Facilitates the preparation and submission of state funding reports, ensuring regulatory compliance and maximize receipt of eligible funds.
8. Maintain a positive public relations program designed to promote understanding of and support for the district transportation program and the district. Meet with parents, the community, and outside agencies as appropriate to support the delivery of quality service.
9. Serves as liaison between transportation and buildings/department and building/department administrators to support, collaborate, and strategize various components including, but not limited to, PBIS/student management, busing logistics/planning, IEP implementation.
10. Coach and support staff in utilizing positive behavior strategies when working with students.
11. Assists in the management of the vehicle maintenance program with an emphasis on vehicle safety and preventive maintenance.
12. Assists in the development and administration of budgets designed to implement long-range transportation plans and goals.
13. May facilitate/serve on various committees as needed to support departmental or district-wide initiatives.
14. Assess road conditions during inclement weather to evaluate the feasibility of transportation operations.
15. May be called on to make presentations to parents, community groups, local government or state agencies, and the school board regarding transportation requirements and programs.
16. Protect the confidentiality of all entrusted information.
17. Act as the Director in the Directors absence to maintain continuity in department operations.
18. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Director of Transportation
MENTAL DEMANDS
Experience frequent interruptions; required to meet inflexible deadlines; requires concentration and attention to detail; may deal with distraught or difficult individuals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelor Degree or higher in Public or Business Administration or completed Central Washington University Pupil Management Training Program. Three or more years demonstrated successful administrative/management experience required or two or more years of demonstrated successful experience in pupil transportation supervision/management preferred.

Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
