Tesla is currently seeking a motivated Manufacturing Engineer to design the material flow for Global Factory Design projects for Vehicle and Energy Products. This role focuses on the end-to-end design of material flow, from concept design through handoff of a fully detailed plan to Operations. This role will design the inbound loading process, provide material handling equipment needs, specify equipment to minimize manual handling, and ensure the lineside space is efficiently designed. This role requires a solid understanding of Manufacturing Engineering fundamentals. It is critical for a successful applicant to solve problems using first principles analysis, and exercise aggressive design optimization. This position is based in Austin, TX. The team is responsible for developing a factory design which supports seamless integration between production, material flow, construction, and facilities teams. Innovation is expected. Through a detailed understanding of the high-level factory objectives and extensive collaboration with the internal and external teams designing individual factory components, this team ensures that the factory design as whole achieves all of Tesla's objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Display a positive attitude and work ethic aligned with Tesla's mission, philosophy, and goals
  • Develop comprehensive material flow designs covering the entire Bill of Materials for new products and factory expansion
  • Design innovative material flow strategies for diverse materials across production lines
  • Integrate forklift-free delivery methods to enhance safety and efficiency
  • Improve and design predictive models for material handling labor, warehouse space, and equipment needs
  • Conduct capacity planning calculations to ensure accurate resource and equipment allocation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Packaging Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Finance, to implement optimal material flow strategies
  • Challenge assumptions in manufacturing design and base recommendations on a first-principles approach
  • Work with Manufacturing and Factory Design teams to create detailed material flow lineside layouts
  • Develop cost-effective, sustainable packaging and part presentation solutions for automated and manual handling


Requirements
  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience in industrial, manufacturing, or mechanical engineering, with a focus on material flow, supply chain, or process improvement (internships considered)
  • Demonstrated leadership driving projects with diverse teams in high-volume manufacturing environments
  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous problems at a systems level to inform decision-making
  • Extensive analytical skills for performing detailed data analysis and summarizing results for executives
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Excel (VBA preferred) and experience with data visualization/analysis tools like Tableau or SQL
  • Experience with layout design in AutoCAD, including greenfield facility layouts and material flow
  • Experience in material handling equipment design/implementation, including automated systems
  • Knowledge of supply chain planning, warehouse design concepts, and working with Packaging Engineering teams for optimized solutions
