Job Description:

Job Summary: Provides supervision over operational activities of the Core Laboratory. Oversees training and monitoring to ensure staff accurately follows processes and procedures with minimum error. Ensures specimen integrity by training and/or monitoring staff on the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing and analyzing; adheres to and trains/monitors staff on the adherence to departmental policies and procedures to include departmental programs, quality control, quality assurance and safety. Promotes quality patient and/or client relations and creates a supportive environment while also serving as a role model. Demonstrates respect and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory.
Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities:
  • Serves as the technical expert/information resource within the assigned laboratory discipline. Under the direction of, and in the absence of the Laboratory Medical Director, ensures adequate performance of all laboratory procedures under their supervision.
  • Performs high complexity clinical tests by following department procedures as needed.
  • Facilitates successful day-to-day operation of the Chemistry and Special Chemistry sections to include scheduling and general supervision of all tasks to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Performs Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS and HIS) computer functions necessary to complete pre-analytic, analytic, post-analytic processes and other tasks and works on the bench as needed.
  • Ensures pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic process of patient testing are performed according to age, gender and specimen acceptability criteria prior to releasing information for use in patient care and treatment.
  • Builds/maintains customer relationships throughout all communications, while demonstrating a professional and positive image to all customers and employees.
  • Reports any problems and/or abnormal findings to the Assistant Manager (if applicable), Laboratory Manager, Director and/or Laboratory Medical Director to ensure timely resolution and follow through.
  • Mentors and supports laboratory staff in their responsibilities and functions (e.g. assess qualifications, orient, and train, supervise, assess skills and competency). Participates in performance reviews and participates with hiring selections.
  • Writes, drafts, reviews, and edits Chemistry Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for testing performed and defines analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity and reference ranges for test methods with input and guidance from team members, Assistant Manager (if applicable), Laboratory Manager, pathologist, Medical Director and Laboratory Director.
  • Ensures technical, mechanical and quality control problems are resolved as they occur and ensuring corrective action plans are documented and staff are informed. Organizes and files maintenance, QC, QA and other regulatory required documentation as required.
  • Ensures necessary instrumentation, testing materials/supplies and other requisite resources are acquired, stored and maintained appropriately.
  • Participates in monthly scheduling, PTO approval with workload covered, and daily Kronos review.
  • Participates in and ensures employee participation in proficiency surveys, quality assurance activities, mandatory training continuing education programs, MIDAS research and corrective action when necessary. Solves/follows through to conclusion any matters or concerns that arise within the department.
  • Ensures that technical staff are responsive to client requests and/or concerns.
  • Ensures all activities within the scope of service continuously meet or exceed established regulatory standards.


  • Qualifications:

    Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited college or university.
    • 4 plus years of clinical laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
    • MT, MLS or CLS registered through American Society Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master's Degree in a Science related field from an accredited college or university.
    • Chem supv-Specialist in Chemistry (SC) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
    • 2 plus years work experience in a management or supervisory type role.
    • Training in advanced laboratory analyzer operation and maintenance.
