Responsible for the delivery of patient-centered, team-based care that falls within the allowable scope of practice. This includes working collaboratively with mid-level providers, registered nurses and medical assistants to provide physical and psychosocial assessments, diagnosis and management of health and illness needs. The primary responsibility of the Staff Physician is direct patient care, both acute and chronic. The Staff Physician will also assist the Chief Medical Officer in supervision of and consultation of the nurse practitioners, as designated.

Essential Function

Clinical Quality

  • Provide high-quality, patient-centered and values-based primary medical care.
  • Effectively use huddles, care gap reports, and integration work to meet treatment and preventative care measures.
  • Provide direct education to patients regarding their medical conditions and treatment options.
  • Appropriate and complete referrals to specialty care as needed.
  • Prescribe and/or dispense medications as appropriate.
  • Efficiently and timely manage and respond to requests for medication refills, document completion, patient messages and general questions.
  • Collaborate with behavioral health, dental, optometry and other health care team members as appropriate for integration, consultation, referral and follow-up.
  • Assist the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director in program development, implementation and evaluation as necessary.
  • Active participation in the health center's quality assurance and peer-review programs.
  • Cooperate in investigations, patient grievances and requests from payers.


Patient Experience

  • Provide patient care services in the spirit of the health center's core values. Convey empathic behavior and communication with patients and encourage all members of the care team to do so as well.
  • Deliver services to the patients' satisfaction as measured by the Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey.
  • Lead team in efforts to increase patient satisfaction survey completion rate.
  • Collaborate with the medical management team to investigate, respond and improve processes related to patient grievances received from payers, social media, and comment boxes/We Care emails.
  • Collaborate with the medical management team to improve workflows, cycle times and the overall patient experience.


Access/Utilization

  • Provide primary medical care services in accordance with health center policies and board approved privileging.
  • Provide coverage to the health center's urgent care schedules.
  • Practice in an efficient and cost effective manner; appropriately order labs and tests.
  • Provide on-call coverage for after-hours care in accordance with health center protocols.
  • Lead the care team in problem solving to see late arriving patients and patients with urgent needs.
  • Collaborate with the medical management team to maximize patient appointment access.


Supervision of Clinical Staff/Leadership

  • Assist mid-level health care providers in the assessment and treatment of patients as necessary. If appropriate, assume responsibility for the clinical situation.
  • Supervision of nursing staff in direct patient care, including the procurement of lab specimens and administration of injectable medications.
  • Assume a leadership role with the care team. Promote positive interactions within the team and engages members to achieve quality, patient experience and access goals.
  • Collaborate with the medical management team to develop support staff to their highest potential.
  • Active participation in department and clinic-wide meetings/trainings.
  • Attend in-services and conferences to continue professional growth and development.


Documentation

  • Complete clear and defensible documentation of patient visits and/or telephone encounters.
  • Appropriate and accurate code encounters.

  • Close encounters in accordance with health center protocols.

  • Provide medication and document queue coverage for colleagues in accordance with health center protocols.


Additional Responsibilities: List infrequently performed and non-essential tasks.

Minimum Position Qualifications: List the minimum qualifications required for this position.
  • Education: Doctor of Medicine Degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree


  • Experience / Training: A minimum of two years of experience in a primary care setting


  • License / Certification: Board certified primary care physician; valid and current California Medical license, DEA number and BLS certification

  • Experience / Training: Prior experience in a community health center; bilingual (English/Spanish)
