Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia Pennsylvania is seeking applicants to fill a full-time faculty position as Chief of Service for the department of Neuro Ophthalmology.

The candidate will function as the clinical and administrative head of the Neuro Ophthalmology Service, as well as provide neuro-ophthalmological clinical services including inpatient, outpatient and consultative. The candidate will have the opportunity to conduct basic, translational or clinical research, and develop or advance a clinically relevant research program that includes quality of care and outcomes. In addition, the candidate will participate in medical student, resident and fellow education.

Requirements:

Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent degree and have a PA license or be eligible for full, unrestricted licensure. Candidates must be board certified in either ophthalmology or neurology and have completed fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmology. 5 years of experience in Neuro Ophthalmology is required. Candidates must have a distinguished record of excellence in clinical care, teaching and research.

Rank and salary commensurate with experience.

Primary Function:
  • Provides clinical and administrative leadership to the Wills Eye Hospital Neuro Ophthalmology Department in furtherance of ongoing ACGME accreditation. Supervises Residents and sees patients accordingly. Manages interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and effective/efficient operations throughout the Wills Eye Health System and with Neurology at Jefferson.
  • Actively practice independent clinical medicine at Wills Eye in the specialty of Ophthalmology and in the subspecialty of Neuro Ophthalmology.
  • Provides teaching in both clinical and non clinical resident interactions as appropriate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serves as the programmatic and operational leader for the Department of Neuro Ophthalmology by working closely with a variety of stakeholders to achieve the strategic goals and objectives.
  • Manage the clinical training of residents and fellows, including, but not limited to, the Jefferson Eye Emergency Room, Jefferson Consult Service, Wills Eye Hospital Inpatient Unit, and the clinical care area of Wills Eye Outpatient services.
  • Serves on a applicable committees of Jefferson and of Wills Eye under the direction of the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief.
  • Develops and implements clinical outcome measures for quality improvement, cost and complication reduction and the implementation of evidence-based medicine.
  • Schedules physicians for shifts and communicates schedule in a timely manner.
  • Contributes to a learning environment by providing educational and research experiences to residents, fellows, medical students, and faculty.
  • Maintains the practice of active independent clinical medicine in Neuro Ophthalmology and maintains productivity expectations within the applicable WEOC Service.
  • Creates an environment that encourages diverse opinion, recognizes differences and incorporates into process and services.
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations to develop knowledge and resources through networking, continuing education, and participation in national, regional and/or local activities.
  • Respects and protects the patients' rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patients' best interest with full consideration of their legal rights.

    • MD/DO
    Licensure:
    • MD/DO license in Pennsylvania
    Experience:
    • Completion of a Neuro Ophthalmology fellowship in either an Ophthalmology or Neurology training program.
    • Minimum five years (5) experience in Neuro Ophthalmology
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to include the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts and build teams.
    • Ability to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction including employees, patients, visitors, faculty, referring physicians and other stakeholders.
