Microsoft Mixed Reality is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to create and refine mechanical part designs through full product development cycles, from ideation to mass production.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will integrate optical and electronic assemblies with mechanisms and mechanical enclosures to create great augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) experiences. To do this, you will be asked to balance the needs of customers, budget, schedule and product requirements while communicating effectively across partner teams. You will create mechanical drawings, work with overseas manufacturers, and refine your designs through prototype builds and reliability validation. At times, you will be required to travel to support validation and manufacturing activities overseas and across the US.

Responsibilities:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a process focus you will be responsible for the line design and bring up in addition to fixture design, verification and validation. Responsibilities also in system design and verification/validation including (but not limited to):
  • System level and sub-system design responsibilities in the development of concept explorations and technology investigations.
  • Create evaluation models and systems to assess performance investigations for various technology components and product features.
  • Perform technical analyses, recommend, prepare and execute designs-of-experiments, and characterize process and design interactions.
  • Interface across multiple disciplines (e.g. Program Management, Mechanical Engineering, Quality, EE) in selection of materials equipment and components for detailed development.
  • Interface directly with sub-system partners for design of and integration of technology components.
  • Stay current and versed in emerging technologies, materials, methods and manufacturing processes.
  • Contribute to project planning for development schedules.


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience setting up assembly lines and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with product and statistical process control, MSA/GRR, part characterization, structured problem solving, root cause and defect/failure analysis, FMEA, DOE, FEA, reliability testing, statistical data analysis.
  • Experience in metrology tools and failure analysis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in electro-mechanical product design, manufacturing, or NPI (new product introduction).
  • Experience in designing for large volume production in a wide range of manufacturing processes (CNC, laser welding/drilling, Molding operations, Extrusion, lamination, printing/s, plating/s, etc.).
  • Integration and development experience with mechanisms.
  • Proven experience in applications with some or all of the following technology verticals: Displays, Batteries, Antennas, Acoustics.
  • BSME/MSME - combination with Material Science (Polymers, Metals, Composites).
Proficient in ProE Creo/SolidWorks. CFD/FEA packages a plus.

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
