JOB DESCRIPTION:

The ESL Program Specialist performs complex and confidential administrative functions, promotes effective operations within the district-level ESL department, ensures ESL department compliance at the school level, and provides ESL professional development and procedural guidance and information to BCS staff, students, parents, and supervisor/principals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serves as district contact person for Empower Academy (newcomers centers), referring out to ESL & World Languages coordinator and other personnel as needed.
  • Communicates with Empower Academy (newcomers centers) students' base schools to coordinate operations and maintain student records, including but not limited to intake/exit, attendance, grades, scheduling, and transportation.
  • Collaborates with ESL teachers to update and maintain accurate EL student data in PowerSchool, ELLevation, other software and applications of record.
  • Designs and delivers targeted ESL professional development to various stakeholder groups at the school, district, and community level.
  • Responds to a wide variety of inquiries from BCS staff, students, parents/guardians, outside agencies, community members, and others for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information, and/or referring to appropriate personnel.
  • Demonstrates professional ethics and maintains a current knowledge of Federal, State, and district LEP laws, policies, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Monitors and maintains an accurate inventory of ESL Department supplies, technology, and materials and places orders as approved in order to ensure adequate levels of availability. Distributes supplies and materials to ESL team.
  • Manages calendars and schedules appointments, meetings, conferences, and other activities; reserves event facilities and supplies if needed; notifies appropriate personnel; and assists with PD travel forms as necessary.
  • Composes or transcribes a variety of manual and electronic correspondence and materials, including but not limited to internal communications, meeting agendas/minutes, forms, letters, notices, bulletins, and memoranda; reviews and proofreads documents; and distributes to appropriate recipients.
  • Compiles and processes documents and forms, including stipend request/payroll forms, Federal Programs documents, Professional Development documents and records, Human Resources documents, purchase orders, leave requests, etc., in accordance with department procedures and district policies.
  • Inputs and verifies various confidential and non-confidential data and information into computer software systems; generates computerized lists and reports as scheduled or requested; duplicates and distributes materials to appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Establishes both paper and electronic filing systems for the purpose of maintaining accurate, complete, and confidential information for use by BCS staff and other appropriate parties.
  • Respects the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and staff.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree required in education or a related area.
  • Minimum of at least three (3) to five (5) years of exemplary ESL teaching experience.
  • Current and valid Alabama Teaching Certificate with certification in ESOL.
  • Experience with educational technology and clerical software.
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language preferred. Master's degree preferred.
  • Prior administrative work or clerical support preferred.
