  • Reports To: Medical Director of Rural Health Clinic.


Job Summary:

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)/Physician Assistant( PA) in Urgent Care provides immediate, high-quality medical care to patients with non-life-threatening conditions that require urgent attention. This role involves evaluating, diagnosing, and managing a wide range of acute and chronic health issues. The FNP/PA works autonomously but in collaboration with a primary care team available to assist in the continuity of care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Assessment and Management:
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients presenting with acute and urgent medical conditions.
    • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as labs, X-rays, EKGs, and other imaging as needed.
    • Diagnose and manage a variety of conditions, including infections, injuries, minor trauma, and acute exacerbations of chronic illnesses.
  • Treatment and Procedures:
    • Develop and implement treatment plans, including prescribing medications and initiating therapeutic interventions.
    • Perform minor procedures such as suturing, splinting, and wound care.
    • Provide emergency care for conditions such as asthma exacerbations, lacerations, and fractures within the scope of practice.
  • Patient and Family Education:
    • Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment plans, and preventive care measures.
    • Offer guidance on follow-up care and when to seek additional medical attention.
  • Collaboration and Coordination:
    • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
    • Coordinate with specialists for referrals and further management of complex cases.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Accurately document patient encounters, including history, assessment, treatment, and follow-up plans in electronic health records (EHR).
    • Ensure adherence to clinical guidelines, protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Quality Improvement and Safety:
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and safety programs to enhance patient care and clinic operations.
    • Stay current with best practices and advancements in urgent care medicine.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Provide immediate care for urgent medical situations and stabilize patients as needed.
    • Respond to medical emergencies within the urgent care setting efficiently and effectively.


  • Qualifications:
    • Education: Master's degree in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialization. Master's Degree from accredited Physician Assistant Program.
    • Licensure/Certification: Current FNP/PA license in NM; Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) or Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) preferred.
    • Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical experience, preferably in urgent care, emergency medicine, or a similar setting. However, willing to train.
    • Skills:
      • Proficiency in diagnosing and managing a wide range of urgent care conditions. Patients range from infants to geriatrics. Ability to suture and care for pediatric patients a plus.
      • Strong clinical skills and ability to perform minor procedures.
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
      • Familiarity with EHR systems and medical documentation.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing for extended periods, lifting, and assisting patients as needed.
    • Manual dexterity for performing procedures and handling medical equipment.


    Working Conditions:
    • Work in an urgent care setting with potential exposure to infectious diseases and various environmental conditions.
    • May require occasional extended hours. No call.
    • Work week is typically four 10 hour shifts per week.
    • Facility opens at 7a
