Summary
To assist students in the reduction of social, emotional and environmental barriers within the Gallup McKinley County School District, and plan and carry out programs to enable children to attain their maximum achievement.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Employees within this class are distinguished from the Social Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including s u p e r v i s o r y responsibilities, a n d overseeing the work of lower level positions. Employees at this level receive only general instructions or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level upon receiving the appropriate license, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience and the appropriate license.
Supervision Received and ExercisedReceives general supervision from the director or designee. May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff and clerical staff Essential Function Statements- Essential duties may include but are not limited to, the following: Acts as case manager and coordinates efforts for the management of individual and group cases as appropriate. Establish and maintain communication between parents, service agencies, and the District regarding students' academic, social and behavioral progress; and ensures parent participation in the students' educational placement through home visits and other outreach activities. Establishes and maintains close working relationships with state, federal, tribal courts and agencies and other social service agencies and serves as the District representative on appropriate and related issues and cases. Consult and collaborate with district and school administrators and school-based professionals by serving as a resource on emotional, social, and environmental issues, contributing to meetings, workshops and other school or district activities. Serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of administrators, school personnel, students and families by participating in the educational planning and progress of students. In collaboration with the coordinator of counseling, develops and delivers in-service programs for school and district staff and the community. Provides family assessments, crisis intervention, group, individual and family counseling and offers information and referral services Maintains professional skills through consultations, in-service activities, and self-selected professional growth activities. Complies with National Association of Social Workers, and the state-approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession. Performs duties in accordance with established plans, policies, and procedures within the framework of applicable Federal, State, District and appropriate Tribal laws. Maintain an awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of students and their families, and assists district personnel in understanding these variations when planning for students and families. Maintain confidential individual records for the purpose of making appropriate referrals and for maintaining continuity of service, and in compliance with Federal. State and District regulations and policies. Marginal Functions: May serve on and attends Student Assistance Team (SAT) meetings to discuss results and targeted goals and objectives with parents and school personnel. Coordinate the work with other administrators, school-based professionals, and other specialists. Provide responsible staff assistance to the SPED director and counseling coordinator Performs related duties and responsibilities as required Knowledge of:
Experience:
Two years of professional social work experience, preferably in a school district setting.
Education:
Master's degree required from an accredited college or university with major course work in social work.
License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate valid Social Workers License from the New Mexico Social Worker Examiners Board. LISW preferred.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired. The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.
Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.
Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hour work may be required.
Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
All GMCS schools are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
