Under general direction of the Environmental Program Manager I (EPMI), the incumbent supervises professional and technical staff; consolidates analytical data and prepares monthly reports and other technical documents; evaluates data reports for potential violation of established tolerance to alert regulatory agencies; and researches for new methods used by the section, reviews and performs statistical analysis of data results to ensure integrity of methods.
As a leader in State government, the incumbent is responsible to develop and inspire their workforce and deliver great results for Californians and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).
Plan, organize, and direct program activities and assignments to appropriate staff and provide daily supervision.
Maintain a high-quality work environment by promoting team work and development of employees' knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at the highest level of professional expertise.
Write reports on work progress and section accomplishments and communicate status reports with clients and stakeholders.
Review the analysis of chemicals, pesticides, pesticide metabolites, prohibitive materials in food and other matrices to ensure data accuracy and defensibility; submit timely environmental sample analysis results to clients to support their mandates of meeting the requirements of state and federal environmental laws and regulations.
Manage program's budget by monitoring and controlling revenues/expenditures while maintaining adequate instrumentation and supplies. Assist EPMI in preparing Budget Change Proposals (BCP's).
Write specifications for laboratory equipment when required; explore and evaluate the need for new technology and set up an instrumentation procurement plan in the program.
Act as consultant for technical field personnel regarding sampling issues and procedures.
Attend and give presentations on laboratory methodologies at various scientific and governmental meetings.

Working Conditions
The Center for Analytical Chemistry has onsite parking, and is located next to a light rail train station.
The duties of this job are performed indoors approximately 100% of the time. Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbents ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFAs Telework Policy. The employee's work place is the CAC Lab in Sacramento which has laboratory equipment necessary for performing the required analyses. The employee has a desk space, books, and a computer necessary to perform required tasks. The building has an air conditioning and heating system. The employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes, gases, or odors when solvents or acids are not properly placed in fume hoods. Noise levels near fume hoods may reach higher than normal levels. Earplugs or earmuffs are provided in these areas.

Department Information
The Center for Analytical Chemistry (CAC) provides invaluable services to California related to sensitive food, and environmental safety issues including crop protection, farm worker safety, data gathering, investigative study activities, and emergency response. CAC is one of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) laboratories operating under the guidance of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to respond to emergencies involving chemical contamination of food. CAC plays an integral role in California's comprehensive regulatory program by providing accurate and reliable analytical support to the County Agriculture Commissioners, State Agencies, and various Departmental programs. The laboratory performs air, soil, and water analyses mandated by the Clean Air and Ground Water Protection Acts.
Special Requirements
