Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and directing the all aspects of nursing and patient care services. The CNO plays a pivotal role in setting and executing the nursing strategy, ensuring high-quality patient care, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment for nursing staff. Fostering and maintaining high standards of professionalism, ethics, and customer service. The CNO will lead and support a team of nurses, foster a culture of excellence and safety, and work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to enhance patient outcome and satisfaction.

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES:
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop and communicate the nursing department's strategic vision and goals in alignment with the overall organizational mission and objectives.
    • Collaborate with other executives to integrate nursing strategies into the broader healthcare strategy.
    • Evaluate and improve patient care deliver systems
  • Clinical Quality and Patient Safety:
    • Establish and uphold high standards of clinical quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance within the nursing department.
    • Implement and monitor evidence-based practices to enhance patient outcomes.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of nursing practice, healthcare trends, and emerging technologies.
    • Foster a culture of continuous quality improvement
  • Nursing Operations Management:
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of nursing services, including staffing, patient care delivery, and resource allocation.
    • Ensure efficient and effective workflow and communication among nursing staff.
    • Promote and maintain a positive work environment that fosters teamwork and collaboration
    • Recruit train and manage nursing and support staff
  • Staff Recruitment and Development:
    • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of nursing personnel.
    • Implement professional development and training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of nursing staff.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Teams:
    • Foster collaboration and communication among healthcare teams, including physicians, allied health professionals, and administrative staff.
    • Work closely with other executives to promote an integrated and patient-centered care approach.
    • Collaborate with other healthcare executives to develop and achieve organizational goals and objectives.
    • Serve as a liaison between the nursing staff and hospital administration, facilitating open communication and addressing any concerns.
    • Represent the nursing department at hospital meeting and committees, contributing to organizational decision-making and policy development.
  • Quality Improvement Initiatives:
    • Monitor and evaluate patient care outcomes, identify areas for improvement and implement quality improvement initiatives
    • Develop and implement nursing policies, procedures, and protocols that align with industry standards and regulatory requirements
    • Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance nursing services, streamline processes, and achieve positive patient outcomes.
    • Analyze data and metrics to identify areas for improvement.
  • Budget Oversight:
    • Contribute to budgeting and financial planning for nursing departments, ensuring efficient use of resources and cost effective practices.
    • Develop and manage the nursing department budget, ensuring effective resource utilization and financial sustainability.
    • Monitor and control expenses within budgetary constraints.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Stay abreast of changes in healthcare regulations and accreditation standards.
    • Ensure nursing services comply with all relevant regulatory requirements and standards.
    • Ensure nursing practices comply with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and hospital policies.
    • Prepare for and participate in regulatory inspections and audits, addressing any findings and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Patient and Family Engagement:
    • Promote a patient-centered care environment by encouraging and supporting initiatives that enhance patient and family engagement.
    • Address patient concerns and feedback.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Represent the organization in community and professional forums.
    • Build and maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders.

  • REQUIREMENTS:
    • Master's degree in nursing or a related field; Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) is a plus.
    • Current and unrestricted nursing license.
    • Knowledge of healthcare regulation and accreditation requirements
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Extensive experience in nursing leadership, including roles such as Director of Nursing or Vice President of Nursing.
    • Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, quality standards, and patient safety.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
