The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 in the UWMC Immunology Lab.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Immunology General Duties
Perform laboratory testing on samples (i.e. patient, research, and proficiency testing), accurately and precisely, as assigned
Using the following types of instruments: Automated immunoanalyzers (e.g. Binding Site Optilite, BioRad BioPlex, Phadia 250), Automated IFA processor (e.g. BioRad PhD)., Electrophoresis apparatus and scanners (e.g. Sebia Phoresis), Luminex multiplex instrument
Manual assays. Examples: ELISA, Radial Immunodiffusion, Line Blot Assays, Cold Agglutinin Titers, Viscosity measurements, Cryoglobulins/Cryofibrinogens
Subjective immunofluorescence microscopy. Examples: Anti nuclear antibodies (ANA), Anti neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), Other cytoplasmic antibodies on tissue substrates
Calculate and report maternal serum risks for birth defects using Alpha software.
Use a variety of computer systems/programs including, but not limited to: Instrument linked computers, Sunquest LIS, Lab Medicine server systems, UW Medicine systems (e.g. Epic), Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, MyChem, MediaLab
Be familiar with and able to use the Immunology Lab procedure and policy manuals.
Perform calibrations, and maintenance procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Immunology instruments according to SOPs.
Run Quality Controls (QC) according to SOPs. Evaluate QC results and take appropriate steps with there are QC failures.
Troubleshoot instrument issues, interacting appropriately with technical support services.
Works independently, manages assigned workload and will ask for help if needed.
Helps other and/or works on projects when scheduled assignments are completed.
Participate in laboratory quality improvement projects and method validation studies.
Participate in laboratory staff meetings.
Review all intra laboratory communication documents (e.g. mailboxes, meeting notes, procedure/job aids changes)
Enter patient and Quality Control Data into the LIS. Notify Reference Lab Services to fax results as needed.
Work with MLS1 to monitor reagent inventories and ensures that supplies arrive in time to perform validation studies before they are needed for clinical testing.
Work with MLS1 to monitors quality control materials and ensures that new supplies are checked out and ready for use.
Answer questions from other laboratories and providers about the testing services offered in the Immunology lab.
Train and teach new employees, medical students, Lab Med Residents, and MLS program students.
Work to maintain a safe working environment in the laboratory.
Participate in technical Competency Assessment programs.
Participate in continuing education programs, as scheduled.
Be familiar with Departmental "Environment of Care" Policies, Work Place Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace.
Perform duties of MLS1
MLS 2 General Duties
Maintain operational performance of the Immunology Lab
Exercise independent decision making using laboratory expertise and designated authority.
Using delegated authority, perform the following quality assurance activities, and work the lead and/or manager to address problems:
Review runs with QC failures and those that do not meet run acceptance criteria and ensure that appropriate steps are taken and documented.
Review instrument maintenance records
Review temperature records.
Review quality assurance failures.
Review weekly and monthly QC data
Ensure that CAP Proficiency Testing and Biannual Verification samples are ordered, tested, and reported according to schedule.
Prepare for and participate in laboratory inspections
Maintain staff training records and track required training and other annual requirements.
Maintain procedure manuals and ensure that techs have done their reviews.
May map out weekly bench assignment schedule for Immunology MLS Lead review and approval.
Monitor the staff's daily work assignments and communicate problems to the Immunology Lead or Manager.
Provides feedback to the Immunology Lead and/or Manager about staff performance.
May purchase reagents and supplies as needed and follows up on orders.
Review and help maintain laboratory procedures, quick reference guides (QRGs), and other job aids.
Functions as a resource for staff in absence of Immunology MLS Lead.
Performs Project related Functions
Works with the Immunology MLS Manager and/or Lead on designing how various projects will advance, defining what needs to be done and whether staff will be involved in the project.
Organizes staff involvement in certain of these projects
Organizes data from projects to present to the Immunology MLS Lead, Manager and Directors for their review
Organizes data from projects requiring review by outside regulatory organizations or for vendor review
Maps out new employee training for review and approval by Immunology MLS Lead.
Train current staff on new methods/instruments/procedures
Assists Manager in performing cost analysis of project proposals
Assists the Immunology MLS Lead and Manager in writing up procedures for new Methods and Instruments, that are related to an ongoing project or which are needed as a result of a successfully concluded project.
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory OR equivalent education/experience
Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division
Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions.
Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather.
May be required to work some weekends and holidays
