Visiting Senior Research Manager

Job Summary
Responsible for leading interdisciplinary teams with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion in disease-prevention, community outreach, research, teaching, and dissemination. The interdisciplinary team will include program managers, researchers, medical students, physicians, Youth Wellness Project staff, community organizations, citizen/community scientists, Michael Roberts Innovation Group (RIG), etc. One of the interdisciplinary teams will focus on developing a new Carle Illinois pathway program for youth (high school and young adults up to age 24) as part of the STEM IL Nobel Project and Youth Wellness Project that will have East St. Louis and the original U of I team working on that project as partners. Another interdisciplinary team will focus on creating and disseminating new knowledge around medical diseases and conditions (e.g., cancer, diabetes, depression, etc.) related to systemic discrimination and other social determinants of health.The Senior Research Manager will work closely with the Carle Illinois' Associate Dean for Diversity and Democratization of Health Innovation and the Cancer Center at Illinois' Associate Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The Senior Research Manager will collect data on local community needs related to Carle Illinois' mission to improve health equity. The position will also work closely with the Carle Illinois Coordinator of Community Partnerships to communicate these community needs with students and ensure coordination of service learning, discovery learning/classes and research opportunities for medical students. In addition, Dr. Lee will work with multiple campus colleges and units including: Siebel Center for Design, Humanities Research Institute, Center for Social and Behavioral Science, Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, College of Applied Health Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, Department of Public Health, Illinois Extension, College of Fine and Applied Arts, College of Engineering, College of Business, and the School of Social Work Community Learning Lab, College of Engineering, Research Park, Discovery Partners Institute, and the Illinois Innovation Network, among others.Duties & Responsibilities
  • Research and Dissemination
    Identify research and publication opportunities for medical students, pathway program participants, and others on the topic of medical diseases and conditions (e.g., prevention, healing and thriving).
    Collect data on local community needs related to Carle Illinois' mission to improve health equity.
    Co-author with Dr. Mendenhall, Virginia Leach, and others a book manuscript about Black women who are diagnosed with breast cancer before the age 40. The work will also be presented at medical conferences.
    Coordinate the Carle Illinois' pathway program evaluations
    Co-author publications on disease prevention, social determinants of health, etc.
    Broadly disseminate research findings in academic and community forums (e.g., medical conferences, peer-reviewed journals, news outlets, community meetings, social media, invited talks, etc.).
    Supervise and coordinate the efforts of researchers engaged with Dr. Mendenhall's program of research (e.g., students, consultants, medical students, Carle Illinois staff, etc.).
    Coordinate research activities with youth and adult Citizen/Community Scientists as they engage in scholarship around social determinants of health and disease prevention. This will include the partnership with East St. Louis and Dr. Michael Roberts.
  • Administration Support
    Develop processes and programs in support of CiSDiPC's diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
    Prepare and distribute information on diversity, equity and inclusion to faculty, researchers, community and external partners.
    Lead the Designing Resiliency and Well-being (DRAW) research team and other interdisciplinary teams
  • Teaching, Mentoring and Student Engagement
    Co-teach Stress and Health in African American Communities (Soc 180), a Community Health Worker and Citizen/Community Science class, and/or a research methods course to recruit a diverse group of researchers into Carle Illinois.
    Inform faculty, students, and staff at Carle Illinois on community needs
    Collaborate with faculty leaders to propose an elective course for medical students on Citizen/Community Science and Disease Prevention that incorporates concepts related to health humanities and social determinants of health.
    Work with the Coordinator of Community Partnerships and Carle Illinois faculty on service-learning opportunities elective classes and research education/opportunities for medical students.
  • Grant Writing and Management
    Lead efforts to
    Identify resources (primarily grants) and prepare grant proposals to support research (including student research projects) and pathway programs. Possible granting agencies include (e.g., NSF, NIH, RWJ, MacArthur, Boeing, etc.).
    Oversee grant writing with support from designated staff.
    Manage grant budgets and reporting.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    Work in conjunction with the College of Medicine initiative with Michael Roberts and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. or terminal degree in discipline
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with conducting and disseminating research with community members.
Budget, grant development and grant management experience.
Experience teaching
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/29/2024. Salary is commensurate with experience.
