JOB SUMMARY:
In conjunction with the Chief Pharmacy Officer and Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer, plans and organizes the
Pharmacy Department to ensure proper preparation, distribution, and storage of
drugs and pharmaceuticals in conformance with legal regulations and standards of
the hospital. In conjunction with the Director and the medical staff, ensure
the development of programs, policies, and procedures that promote the delivery of
the safe and effective use of medications and other quality pharmaceutical
ervices.
With the Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer is responsible for recommending and staffing the department with a sufficient number of professional and technical personnel and
for developing policies, programs and procedures for the orientation and
continuing education in order to assure staff competency. Responsible for the
ongoing effective operation of the department and for assessing and improving
Pharmacy services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In conjunction with the CPO and ACPO, hires, orients, trains, and evaluates staff of 30-40. Works with the CPO and ACPO to interview, recommend hiring, discipline, and/or recommend
discharge.
Supervises daily activities including preparation of solutions, pre-packaging
upplies, maintaining inventory levels, filling requisitions delivery of narcotics
to nursing units, filling and maintaining of automated dispensing, pre-packaging
machines, and preparing sterile products, chemotherapy, etc. in the IV room.
Develops, implements, and coordinates orientation and training programs for new
Pharmacy employees.
Updates policy and procedures for Pharmacy for review by CPO.
Review new Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technician staff and students progress during
orientation period and if necessary schedules further or more intensive training
in selected areas as required for each individual. Completes all CBO's on time.
Schedules all training hours in the different areas for new Pharmacists, Pharmacy
Technician staff and students, and evaluates which individuals are capable of
functioning in which areas. Ensures that technicians are trained in the various
areas to provide adequate coverage for the different areas at all times.
Supervises monthly meetings for staff to discuss problems, communicates changes
and/or additional policy and procedures in the Pharmacy.
Serves as a member of the Pharmacy management team, to review departmental
decisions. Represents Pharmacy on various hospital committees.
With ACPO completes all competencies, CBO's, CBE's, and other
requirements for all staff, on time.
Assists ACPO in organizing educational programs for Pharmacy
taff, as well as presentations for local and national pharmacy meetings.
With Assistant CPO, organizes workflow to provide staff pharmacist
opportunities to perform clinical pharmacy functions.
Assists CPO to develop monthly financial reports for Executive Management
Team.
Coordinates and directs the functions and activities of the Pharmacy
Department to promote prompt, accurate and efficient processing of medication
orders.
Analyzes and evaluates Pharmacy functions, practices, reporting, record
keeping and control over drugs and other substances.
Develops and implements policies, procedures and techniques relative to
afety, infection and environmental control standards.
Implements and monitors compliance with drug regulations and other regulatory
requirements.
Inspects department for compliance with established standards and take
corrective action as necessary.
Coordinates and collaborates with medical/nursing personnel to provide
consultation, education, technical or informational services to ensure effective
management of patient care.
Monitors department records and reporting systems, particularly controlled
ubstance records.
Organizes and ensures inventory control working with buyer.
Ensures proper storage and security of narcotics and controlled substances.
Inspects and supervises storage areas to ensure the removal of outdated,
deteriorated or recalled medications from stock.
Selects, trains and orients personnel.
Monitors and supervises staff.
Evaluates performance/recommends personnel actions (promotions, disciplinary
action).
Resolves employee grievances.
Promotes professional development of personnel through inservice education or
outside programs.
Recommends capital expenditures.
Develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures and objectives for the
department.
Monitors, develops and implements all aspects of Pharmacy Department Quality
Assurance and Improvement activities.
Participates in administrative staff meetings and other meetings as required,
i.e. Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Quality and Performance Improvement Committee.
Promotes and monitors safety of personnel and equipment.
Acts as a liaison with the medical and nursing staffs.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy possessing a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy
Or Pharm. D. and registration as required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and by
Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
* Minimum of five years experience with three years supervisory and/or
managerial experience.
* Knowledge of the special needs and behaviors of infant, child,
adolescent, adult and older adult patients preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY : Oversee 35 FTE's .
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY : Assist Director of Pharmacy with $12.5 million budget.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Satisfactory physical environment with occasional distraction from machine or related noise, or exposure to unpleasant elements such as chemical fumes, dust, or temperature variations caused by poor ventilation.
