Job Description

The Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health (SOPH) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), is inviting applications for the Director of the DATA coordinating and Collaborative Research Unit (DATA CRU, https://www.uab.edu/datacru), a team of specialized research professionals providing data coordinating center (DCC) operations for longitudinal cohort studies and randomized clinical trials. This position will be a key driver of the further development, management, and activities of the DATA CRU. This is a tenure earning appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor in the School of Public Health.

As the senior faculty member leading the DATA CRU, the Director will oversee a large staff responsible for day-to-day DCC operations and coordinate resources among multiple projects with specific Principal Investigators, staff leaders, and faculty co-investigators. The Director will work with multidisciplinary investigators on the development and conduct of new multicenter studies and trials, communicate data management needs and statistical concerns to statistician and non-statistician collaborators, and contribute to statistical analyses for presentation and publication. Importantly, the Director will guide the future direction of DCC operations to capitalize on existing areas of strengths (e.g., neurology, cardiology, maternal/fetal medicine, pediatrics) and to expand strategically into areas of growth (e.g., oncology) in the SOPH, UAB at large, and beyond, and advocate for resources needed to carry out those objectives.

Founded in 1978, the UAB SOPH has grown to 84 full-time faculty and 806 students (in the 2023-24 academic year). The UAB SOPH is the only CEPH-accredited public health program in Alabama and both the school (18th) and department (13th) are ranked in the top 20 nationally by U.S. News & World Report. The SOPH is second only to the School of Medicine at UAB for extramural research funding among all 12 schools at UAB. In 2023, the UAB SOPH had more than $42 million in grants and contracts and ranked 29th among all Schools of Public Health and 19th for all Public Schools of Public Health for NIH funding. UAB is a very high research activity (R1) university ranked 13th among public universities in NIH funding and 25th (top 5%) of all universities in NIH awards and an academic health center that discovers, teaches, and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social, and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state, and beyond. Spanning more than 100 city blocks, UAB is the state of Alabama's largest single employer with some 25,000 employees and has an annual, state-wide economic impact exceeding $12.1 billion. Forbes named UAB America's Best Large Employer for 2021 and best in-state employer in 2023.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Lead a staff of over 40 clinical research specialists and coordinators, program managers and project directors, statisticians, and computer programmers, and be responsible for the organization's growth and changes to move the DATA CRU forward
  • Collaborate on the development and submission of multicenter and multinational funding applications for randomized clinical trials and cohort studies with a DCC component
  • Develop and oversee budgets for multicenter DCCs
  • Identify and plan statistical tasks, timelines, and resources with project teams and account for critical dependencies and resources to ensure that statistical work meets deadline commitments and quality standards
  • Oversee and participate with project teams in documentation management related to clinical trials including case report forms, electronic data capture, and data management validation plans and their deployment
  • Provide expert advice on the design of protocols, statistical analysis plans, and data management plans within grants and contracts.
  • Provide statistical advice on complex statistical problems and perform statistical analyses
  • Contribute to the definition and oversight of the setup, methodology, decision making, support, and implementation of DCCs
  • Contribute to the oversight and mentorship of junior faculty members, statisticians, data managers, and computer programmers
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and videoconferences to provide consulting, interpretive, and analytical support
  • Evaluate compliance with current and relevant clinical and statistical regulatory requirements (e.g., GCP, ICH, CDISC, FDA, and other requirements)
  • Represent the Department of Biostatistics in the internal and external research communities in developing and conducting studies
  • Drive statistical thinking and knowledge across programs
  • Encourage new statistical methodologies and make recommendations, or capitalize on opportunities where new methodology or approaches could save costs and time
