Job Title: Surgical Technician
Job Specialty: Surgical

Shift: 10-hour day shift, Variable-variable 5x8 Hr
Guaranteed Hours: 40.00 hours
Experience: One year of experience in a surgical setting preferred. Experience in a specialty field preferred. Basic computer skills required.
License: For those working in Colorado, registration as a Surgical Technologist with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) is required, unless performing functions within the scope of another clinical Colorado license, certification, or registration.
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association - Required
- Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBTSTSA) or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) - Required
Must-Have:
- Ability to float to locations within sixty (60) miles of the original assignment or identified float zone
- English proficiency skills (Read, Write, Speak)
Job Description:
- Assist surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile set-up of instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases.
- Use physician preference cards to identify supplies and equipment needed for surgical or emergency procedures and update cards with necessary changes.
- Set up sterile tables with necessary instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions.
- Prepare solutions and medications for procedures, label them properly, and report amounts used for charting.
- Prepare back table and mayo stand, anticipating surgeon's needs, using the surgeon's preference card.
- Provide supplies or equipment upon request to the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist.
- Assist with draping sterile fields and covering operating and instrument tables.
- Perform appropriate counts with circulator prior to operation, before incision closure, and as needed.
- Deliver surgical specimens/cultures to the circulating nurse.
- Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique during procedures.
- Prepare and sterilize supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Review and replace supplies in the surgical case following a procedure and discard expired medications per protocol.
- Assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room and prepare the room for the next patient.
- Hold retractors or instruments, sponge or suction operative sites, apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cut suture material, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to wounds.
- Provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours as per department and/or facility policy.
- Communicate effectively with the surgeon and nursing staff.
- Anticipate possible problems or complications during cases and adjust quickly for emergent cases that change workflow.
- Perform all duties conscientiously, courteously, and caringly to maintain positive customer relations.
- Maintain efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours.
- Adhere to department procedures and acceptable protocols.
- Apply knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to the immediate supervisor.
- Participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities.
- Participate in professional and program development by attending department in-services, meetings, and sharing professional expertise to enhance the quality of patient care and staff development.
- Demonstrate effective time management and prioritize workload to meet productivity requirements.
- Adapt to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.
