Alberta Health Services is inviting applications for an Adult Psychiatrist with specialist qualification or experience in psychiatry of learning disability. The post is primarily a community focused practice. The position will entail providing leadership and direct care for clients served by the Edmonton and Sub-Urban Mental Health Clinics. These teams operate under the Community Mental Health Service and provide service to our most vulnerable adults with complex and severe psychiatric disorders and chronic mental health needs including clients on CTO.
We are looking for a dedicated candidate who is sensitive, empathic, and compassionate in dealing with people with learning disabilities and their families/carers. Our service emphasizes the recovery model with the active involvement of the patient and their family/carers and their family doctors.
The successful candidate will provide specialist assessments and diagnoses for learning disability clients including those with complex presentations and diagnostic uncertainties. The successful candidate will conduct initial assessments, treatment care planning, pharmacological & non-pharmacological management, and follow-ups at the Edmonton Mental Health Clinics. The post holder will work with other services including Community Outreach Assessment and Support Program (COAST), Adult Mental Health services, Addiction Services, Young Adult Services, Community Forensic Services, inpatients services, family doctor practices, and Primary Care Networks within the Edmonton Zone to provide excellent clinical care. The post holder will be expected to participate in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and provide support to the team clinicians as required.
The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the adult mental health learning disability community team and work collaboratively with all multidisciplinary team members including fellow psychiatrists, clinicians, occupational therapists, social workers, speech and language therapists, psychologists, and other learning disability services staff. The post holder will support the service to increase and maximize access for people with learning disabilities to the available services within the Addiction and Mental Health Service in Edmonton Zone through their collaborative work with other mental health services in the zone.
In addition to providing excellent clinical care, the successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in the strategic development of the team by working with the leadership to guide the development of the service to align with the strategic direction of Alberta Health Services Four Foundational Strategies.
The successful candidate will participate in quality improvement initiatives within the program. There are opportunities to participate in research within the Division of Community Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. The successful candidate will be expected to be actively involved in the training of medical students and residents and as such is expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague Appointment within the Department of Psychiatry, which will be considered a separate process via the University of Alberta.
There will be an expectation for the successful candidate to participate in the Community on Call program for the Access 24/7 program within the zone.
