Description
IFC - a member of the World Bank Group - is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. We work in more than 100 countries, using our capital, expertise, and influence to create markets and opportunities. Our mission is to leverage the power of the private sector to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity on a livable planet.
IFC's Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services (MAS) Department covers sectors that cater to basic human needs such as food, shelter, jobs, and health and education. They play a critical role in providing goods and services to consumers, creating jobs, contributing to government revenue, and stimulating growth through SMEs. MAS priorities are: (i) driving inclusion and promoting access to quality services, education, supply chains, and other goods and services; (ii) supporting climate and GHG reduction (in hard-to-abate manufacturing sectors, for agriculture and land use, green buildings and real state portfolios); and (iii) strengthening productivity and competitiveness to feed the world, and to develop resilient supply chains (agri, pharma, manufacturing). In addition to financing, MAS acts on these priorities through value-added support (technical assistance, market studies, etc.) delivered through its Upstream/Advisory team.
The MAS Advisory Upstream in the LAC region is looking to hire an individual consultant (extended term contract - ETC) to support in the project management of the following active agri projects:
In the Orinoquia region of Colombia, IFC is working with agri clients/targets in the beef, dairy, cocoa and coffee sectors. There currently are two ongoing projects with the overarching goal of supporting the development of climate-smart land use and green supply chains to secure sustainable livelihoods and reduce land use GHG emissions, in coordination with other World Bank Group programs and through support of the BioCarbon Fund's Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes (ISFL).
In Haiti, IFC is working with local partners (aggregator GreenFresh, farmer association SOHADERK, and technical implementer FONHDAD) to demonstrate a scalable model for local horticultural production that aims to improve productivity and increase income for local farmers. The project is funded by the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP).
In Costa Rica, a recently approved upstream project is working with a leading producer of insect protein feed (black soldier fly larvae - BSFL) to increase its production capacity targeted to the aquaculture feed and the pet food markets. In addition to investment, IFC will provide technical assistance support for GHG measurement, development of trials for byproducts, among other selected studies.
At regional level, the MAS LAC Upstream team is also carrying out a set of scoping and diagnostic studies to identify the largest and most investable companies across all agri sectors in selected Central America and Caribbean countries. Through this project, the team will also pilot the implementation of a tool for effective identification of early investment leads including engagement workshops and follow on support.
Duties and Accountabilities
The individual consultant will support project leaders in the day-to-day project management and reporting of these initiatives with potential to support business development and project design of new programs in the LAC region. The candidate must be a self-starter, capable of taking initiative to cover a range of tasks, able to thrive in a small, entrepreneurial team/environment and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
The consultant will perform the following tasks:
Support implementation of ongoing activities, including but not limited to: supporting procurement and engagement with vendors, participating in meetings with project partners, reviewing deliverables and monitoring that ongoing tasks are completed as envisioned and responding to requests from donors, local country offices and other stakeholders.
Contribute to the definition of concept notes, project plans, budgets, TORs and donor reports as well as providing overall support to the TTLs and Regional Lead to ensure that IFC fulfills its mandate.
Provide support to TTLs and Regional lead during IFC's reporting cycle which includes: collecting, organizing, validating and reporting M&E data, ensuring that relevant information is appropriately stored in internal systems (iportal)
Support with project communications, development and writing of documents reflecting IFC's agribusiness advisory activities in LAC with a special focus on knowledge management and sharing.
Carry out research as needed and provide any other assistance needed by the Regional Team
This ETC contract will be based in DC for an initial length of 12 months, with possibility of extension subject to performance and demand.
Selection Criteria
A Masters degree in Economics, Finance, Business or a related area with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in the LAC region.
Experience with agri projects with a solid understanding of impact investments for agro-commodities and supply chains in LAC. Experience in other regions a plus.
Established and successful track record in day-to-day project management, including planning and implementation of activities under tight deadlines and experience working with diverse teams.
Advanced writing skills with demonstrated ability for summarizing large amounts of information, using graphics/tables and carrying out extensive research from various sources to prepare business documents and presentations. Advanced user level proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, Word is a must
Team player with good problem-solving skills, attention to detail with an ability to execute tasks timely and effectively
