Financial Officer

Primary Purpose: To provide financial reporting and administrative support to the GIWS management team and membership, through review and analysis of financial data and transactional processing.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Financial Officer is required to understand and apply university policies and guidelines, as well as external funding agreement requirements. The primary purpose of this position is to provide support in all areas of financial and administrative matters. This position carries out a wide range of responsibilities, from assisting with hands-on transactional processing, to financial statement and budget management, and working collaboratively with key stakeholders across the UofS, including working closely with ConnectionPoint. Attention to detail, the ability to multi-task and the need for concentration over sustained periods of time are required. The Officer manages multiple responsibilities with frequent changes and shifting priorities. With multiple tasks and stakeholders, the ability to manage conflicting needs is essential. The appointee will be based full time in Saskatoon, interact closely with Institute faculty and support staff.

Accountabilities:
  • Preparing monthly fund reconciliations;
  • Setting up and managing fee for service operations;
  • Assist with the processing of purchase orders, cheques and service income requisitions, accounts receivable invoices, and payment receipts, as well as travel expense claims;
  • Assist with processing of payroll related documents;
  • Ensure that program budgets and funds are administered in accordance with University policies and funder guidelines;
  • Ensure the business processes are effective and consistent with University policies;
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure that budgets are managed appropriately; and
  • Other general administrative duties, as required, to support general administrative functions in the office.

Qualifications

Education: A relevant university degree is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience: At least 3 to 5 years of directly related experience in a post-secondary or equivalently complex environment would be an asset. Experience preparing financial reports using conventional reporting tools and advanced Excel functions is necessary. Knowledge of university core financial, human resource (Unifi and About-US), federal Tri-Agency programs and high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite would be a valuable asset.

Skills: Strong accounting skills; demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to collaborate with a wide range of people, and to interpret and communicate financial information and systems to a non-financial audience; proficiency in the use of advanced spreadsheet applications/functions and database applications; ability to multi-task; effective research, analysis, writing and communication skills. The demonstrated ability to support senior level administrators and to work effectively with confidential and sensitive information is essential. The ability to working independently, collaboratively or as part of a group. The successful candidate will have a desire and willingness to keep abreast of changing processes, procedures and technologies.
