Brief Job Summary

The Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria, in collaboration with OSF HealthCare, seeks an academic medical oncologist to join a growing department known for clinical excellence and innovative educational programs. The Department of Medicine seeks to enhance and expand its training programs through the implementation of an ACGME accredited hematology/medical oncology fellowship program. The position requires experience and knowledge of regulations governing resident/fellow education and/or excellence and experience in basic/translational research in the field of oncology to support the scholarly requirements of the program. The candidate will teach fellows, residents and medical students at a 650-bed, tertiary care, academic medical center and in the new, state of the art OSF Cancer Institute.

Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Diagnose, treat, and manage cancer patients, providing high-quality oncology care.
  • Develop personalized treatment plans using chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies.
  • Coordinate/collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (radiologists, pathologists, surgeons) to optimize patient care.
  • Utilize EPIC Electronic Health Records.

Fellow/Resident/Student Education

  • Supervise and assess medical students and/or resident/fellow physicians on clinical hematology and/or oncology rotations.
  • Prepare and lead student/resident/fellow educational sessions on hematology and oncology topics in rotation with other faculty attending physicians.
  • Mentor and guide residents/fellows in research and scholarly activities.
  • Provide Grand Rounds lecture yearly upon request.

Research

  • In collaboration with the Department Chair, conduct and contribute to oncology research, including translational and clinical studies.
  • Lead or participate in clinical trials, working to develop and evaluate new cancer therapies.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals to advance scientific knowledge in the field of oncology.
  • Monitor program budgets and participate in efforts to secure extramural funding for clinical and research initiatives.

Administrative

  • Administer and maintain clinical and academic programs to enhance patient care and promote an environment conducive to education.
  • Oversee/participate in quality improvement initiatives within the oncology service line and participate in university and/or hospital committees to advance excellence in clinical care and education.
  • In collaboration with the Department Chair, assist in recruitment and retention of a diverse program faculty and hematology/oncology fellows.
  • Participate in and contribute to department-level strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Seek to contribute to the advancement of the DEI mission of our college.
  • Perform duties in a manner that complies with all applicable standards, rules, policies, and regulations of the hospital,University of Illinois, Joint Commission, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate to advance the mission of the Department of Medicine.

Professional Development and Collaboration
  • Stay updated with advancements in oncology and integrate new knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with national and international oncology societies and networks.
  • Attend and present at medical conferences, contributing to scientific knowledge in the field of oncology.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Eligible for licensure in Illinois
  • Board certified or eligible in Internal Medicine
  • Successful completion of fellowship in Oncology
  • MD/DO degree

Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference given to candidates with experience as core faculty in ACGME accredited training programs
  • Preference given to candidates with research experience leading to extramural funding opportunities and dissemination of scholarly works including peer reviewed publications
