Position:
The College of Business and Economics invites applications for a non-tenure track, 9-month Professor of Practice position in the Department of Accounting. Preferred start date is January 2025. This position is specifically for a Professor of Practice in the field of financial accounting, auditing, and analytics. The professor of practice will be engaged in teaching, curriculum development, and outreach to our community college and professional partners. The faculty would also serve as our liaison to and center director for our Maryland CASH (VITA) campaign. They would also play a key role in the ongoing process of articulating the Towson Accounting curriculum with those offered by community colleges, and that which is necessary to complete the Maryland CPA designation.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in accounting or master's in business with bachelor's degree in accounting, and an active CPA license are required. Doctoral degree and prior teaching experience at the college level are preferred. The candidate must have a minimum of five years working full time as a professional in an accounting and/or business environment. The candidate must also be committed to meeting Towson's mission by serving the department, college, and university.
Faculty in the College of Business and Economics are annually reviewed by peers, which is an essential feature of effective teaching. Being flexible to the scheduling needs of the department is required. The position calls for the person hired to be able to teach at all campuses where Towson University class are offered including the main campus and the TU Northeast (TUNE) campus in Harford County as needed. The position may require after hours and/ or off-campus activities periodically.
Responsibilities:
A teaching load of 21 (face-to-face or other) credit hours per academic year is required. The faculty will provide classroom instruction, prepare for courses, continuously improve subject matter competence, create teaching and learning materials, create new courses as needed, and advise students in their academic progress. As local VITA program director, the faculty will work with Maryland CASH campaign to coordinate training for student and faculty participants in the program and supervise the teams of faculty and students working to complete tax returns for VITA beneficiaries. The faculty will also work with the department chair to maintain relationships with high schools, community colleges, and practitioner partners. This will also involve assisting in the process of developing course curriculum that enhances opportunities for students to earn a CPA designation and succeed in the field of professional accounting.
Once hired, retaining professional qualification requires evidence of continuous learning during the most recent five-year period. Additional responsibilities include serving on committees at the department, CBE, and/ or University levels. The position will also provide opportunities for the faculty to engage in practitioner-based research and publishing opportunities.
The Department:
The department of accounting offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Master's degree in Accounting and Business Advisory Services. It has earned supplemental accreditation from the AACSB. The department serves a population of almost 500 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. The department is staffed by 14 tenured or tenure track faculty, one lecturer and seven adjunct instructors.
