Background:

This job posting is intended to collect resumes for candidates who are interested in serving as a Chief of Staff in an office for a New Member of Congress. The expectations, duties, and skill areas of the position represent a sampling of what may be expected in a Congressional office. Actual job expectations, duties, skills, and other requirements for a Chief of Staff position may vary by office. Sample Job Expectations:

The Chief of Staff will be expected to work with the Memberto determine the overall strategies of the office. This includes, but is notlimited to, formulating policy positions, overseeing the office's legislative andmedia relations strategies, and collaborating with District staff on importantoutreach and communication efforts. In addition, the Chief of Staff willprovide leadership and guidance to structure the office to provide outstandingconstituent relations. The Chief of Staff will also oversee all recruiting andhiring efforts, the establishment of office policies and procedures, andperform other critical functions to support legislative and administrativeoperations. Finally, the Chief of Staff will have direct supervision over theLegislative Director, Communications Director, and District Director. Travel tothe District is required.

Sample Job Duties:
  • Serves as the confidential and strategic advisor for the Member
  • Leads and oversees all legislative, policy, communications, and constituent services strategies for the Member's office
  • Acts as the Member's chief policy advisor
  • Develops and implements all policy objectives, strategies, and operating plans for the Member's office
  • Manages and directs all activities and staff of the Member's D.C. and district offices
  • Coordinates Member and office activities with the House leadership and Committees
  • Oversees the office budget and personnel activities

Sample Requirements:
  • Prior experience working in the US Congress and/or Federal government
  • Experience developing and implementing a strategy for an organization or Member office
  • Experience building productive working relationships and serving as a leader for staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to positively influence and advise staff on policy decisions, legislative initiatives, and office management
  • Comfortable balancing multiple responsibilities and competing deadlines
  • Politically savvy and has experience navigating the culture at the House of Representatives
  • Strong decision-making and strategic thinking skills
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining relationships with constituents and community leaders

Sample Preferences:
  • Bachelor's degree in government, political science, or related field
  • Familiarity with Member's district and/or state
  • A demonstrated interest in public service
