The Department of Neurological Surgery has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/ Engineer 4 to join their team.
Position Background
Neurological Surgery clinical training programs
This position supports multiple projects. Most are studies of surgical cases of patients experiencing spinal surgery, brain tumors, skull-based tumors and cerebrovascular disease and injury in neurological surgery patients
Scientific Writing
Assist trainees, faculty and external collaborators with drafting, formatting, editing and submission of high-quality scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals, scientific meetings and other publication formats.
Participate in the development of concise and accurate descriptions of research for use in publications, including press releases, policy briefs, and infographics.
Identify ways to best represent data and results in scientific publications including charts, graphics, and video.
Assist in the development and implementation of scientific writing skills training for trainees, faculty and researchers.
Prepare, write, and edit talking points for the Department Chair, Vice Chair of Research, and other departmental leadership.
Develop communications that highlight and increase the visibility of the academic mission and research performed by the Department of Neurological Surgery.
Publication Management
Manage the submission process for peer-reviewed research and other types of publications for faculty, researchers, data professionals, and others.
Develop and update an overall timeline for research publication production; assume responsibility for ensuring that all of the multiple and interrelated aspects of the process are tracked and managed.
Adapt quickly to changing timelines if project milestones or deadlines shift.
Strategize, develop and implement long range objectives for the department and residents involving scientific research and publication.
Resident Research Support
Provide administrative oversight to annual resident grant submissions (approx. 4 residents, 4-8 submissions per resident).
Develop grant mechanism-specific and resident-specific timelines for each submission and liaise between resident, mentor, Vice Chair of Research, and Director of Resident Research for coordination and planning.
Oversee all formatting, provide support in developing ancillary documents, tracking production of all required materials.
Manage resident grant submissions with ABC contact to assure successful proposal submissions.
Maintain annual schedule of resident research education, including required didactic courses and certifications for research residents
Maintain online repository of resident research resources, including example applications, previous submissions and reusable grant materials
Compile annual research productivity reports on all individual residents for resident performance reviews
Assist the Vice Chair of Research and Director of Resident Research in training grant (UE5) documentation and reporting
Other Duties as assigned
Develop an understanding of roles and areas of expertise of Neurological Surgery faculty and staff.
Lead Responsibilities:
This position will assist neurological surgery trainees in the scientific writing and publishing process, coordinate and aid them in grant submission, and track the progress of each resident/fellows' publishing/grant submission requirements and goals established by the Vice Chair of Research in Neurological Surgery.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience,
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
At least four years of experience with scientific writing or publishing strongly preferred.
Demonstrated expertise managing multiple projects with shifting deadlines and involvement of multiple stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and command complex, multidisciplinary material in the neurosciences.
Demonstrated ability to write about scientific, technical content in a clear, cogent, and concise manner.
Ability to quickly understand and synthesize relevant materials for scientific audiences.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment in collaboration with a range of individuals, including senior faculty, project officers, data professionals, and editors.
Strong written and oral communication skills with direct experience presenting to scientific audiences.
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with external constituents and Neurosurgery colleagues.
Experience using reference/citation management software
Experience working with academic medical faculty
