Description:
The Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy at High Point University seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences. This is a 12-month faculty position (tenured or tenure-track), and academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications. The Chair will oversee a department of 10 talented faculty members, providing strategic oversight and leadership to ensure excellence in teaching, research, service, and faculty development. This role also includes fostering collaboration across departments and disciplines to enhance the educational and research missions of the School of Pharmacy and the University.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, or a related biomedical science field.
- A distinguished record of scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications and external funding.
- Demonstrated academic leadership experience, such as serving as a department chair or program director.
- Strong commitment to teaching excellence, student success, and faculty development.
- Proven ability to lead distinct teams and foster collaboration and inclusivity.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Advanced skills in leading teams and dealing with varied groups of people and stakeholders
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
- Experience working with students and faculty as a mentor and/or preceptor.
Preferred
- PharmD and/or BS Pharm degree (strongly preferred)
- Licensure as a pharmacist
- Experience in a pharmacy school setting, particularly with professional (Pharm.D.) education.
- Knowledge of ACPE accreditation standards and processes.
- Established record of interdisciplinary collaborations and securing extramural funding.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Administration
- Provide oversight and leadership for departmental activities, including faculty recruitment, retention, mentoring, and development.
- Lead departmental initiatives and activities related to accreditation and strategic planning and implementation
- Make recommendations to the Dean regarding resources and budget needs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a strategic plan for the department that is in alignment with University and FWSOP mission, vision, and goals
- Communicate departmental activities through frequent and collegial communication with the Dean and Executive Committee.
- Serve as the department's representative in School, University, and external professional activities as requested by the Dean.
- Integrate and foster interdisciplinary interactions/collaborations between the clinical sciences and basic sciences in areas of research, education, and service
- Serve as an ex-officio member with full rights on the School's Executive Committee.
- Adjudicate personnel matters and serve as the administrative representative for grievance procedures within the department.
- Collaborate with the University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to ensure resources are available to support departmental research programs.
- Abide by University and School of Pharmacy policies.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
Teaching and Curriculum Oversight
- Ensure delivery and completion of programmatic requirements, including oversight of departmental courses and syllabi.
- Serve as the department point of contact for the School's curriculum and assessment committees and lead department efforts related to curriculum and programmatic assessment.
- Lead continuous quality improvement efforts related to Department courses and collaborate with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Chair of the Department Clinical Sciences to ensure alignment of courses with program objectives and accreditation standards.
- Teach assigned courses within the School of Pharmacy as needed to satisfy programmatic requirements.
Faculty and Student Development
- Supervise and annually evaluate departmental faculty in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.
- Provide mentorship and advisement for students when needed.
- Develop, implement and monitor a mentoring plan for department faculty.
- Develop programs/training to ensure that basic pharmaceutical sciences faculty are familiar with the profession and current practice of pharmacy as required by accreditation standards
Research and Scholarship
- Promote interdisciplinary research that is nationally competitive for extramural funding.
- Manage departmental research capabilities, including lab equipment purchases, maintenance, and inventory.
- Publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at national and international meetings as allowed by allocated research effort.
- Support media relations and development activities to recognize and promote faculty and student research.
School, University and Community Engagement and Service
- Advance the service missions of the School of Pharmacy and University to meet community needs.
- Act as a representative and advocate for the department, School of Pharmacy, and University in professional and governmental organizations.
- Participate in admissions interviews and committees at the department, School of Pharmacy, and University levels.
