The Chief Finance and Operating Officer (CFOO) will have responsibility and accountability for the strategic direction of Bet Tzedek ensuring that the mission and vision of the firm is achieved in a growth oriented, strategic, and sustainable manner. The CFOO will work with the Chief Executive Officer and will oversee and execute the operational functions of the organization helping streamline and strengthen processes and systems to ensure maximum efficiency and efficacy in Bet Tzedek's work. The success of Bet Tzedek requires supportive relationships with, and motivation of, Bet Tzedek's many volunteers as well as staff. The CFOO must believe in the core values of Bet Tzedek and be driven by its mission.

This position is eligible for Bet Tzedek Legal Services' hybrid/remote workplace designation. While the primary workplace is Bet Tzedek's offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload/business obligations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSPONSBILITIES:

  • Development of agency-wide strategies designed to facilitate the agency accomplishing its goals and priorities as reflected in its strategic plan as well as the goals and priorities held by individual departments and programs.
  • Partner with leadership, staff, and consulting teams, to foster a collaborative, communicative work culture, centered in Bet Tzedek's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Build systems and processes that will enable the agency's various teams to work together collaboratively and effectively.
  • Ensure effective coordination and collaboration across the organization by serving as liaison between Legal Program, Grants, External Affairs, HR, Finance, Compliance and CEO.
  • Communicate effectively with Bet Tzedek's Budget & Investment Committee, Audit Committee, and its Board of Directors, ensuring all Board members clearly understand the organization's financial health and sustainability.
  • Lead, manage, and develop a high-performing and diverse team working across key infrastructure areas, including strategic finance, accounting, and operations.
  • Mentor and lead the finance and operations team, with an eye towards both developing the team as professionals and holding them accountable for meeting goals.
  • Create a customer-oriented team culture, focused on providing timely and accurate information, along with robust finance and operations support.
  • Serve as an exemplar for inclusive and equitable team management, modeling Bet Tzedek's diversity, equity, and inclusion values in managerial practices.
  • In partnership with the CEO and leadership team, develop financial strategy for Bet Tzedek's setting short- and long-term financial goals through sophisticated financial forecasting and scenario planning, informed by accurate and real-time financial information.
  • Drive firm's overall financial stability, leading strategic revenue, cash flow, and expense strategies that lead to continued growth and sustainability.
  • Continue to optimize financial and analytics platforms to provide robust information to organizational leaders, enabling enterprise-wide real-time reporting and decision-making
  • Working closely with the finance team, oversee the annual budgeting process; monitor progress and changes
  • Working closely with the accounting team, oversee both internal and external reporting, including ensuring compliance with GAAP and all applicable local, state, and federal laws
  • Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to all relevant key stakeholders on an ongoing basis
  • Development of policies and procedures deemed necessary to implement agency-wide strategies.
  • Development of key performance indicators by which achievement of goals and priorities will be measured.
  • Monitor and improve procedures to identify and implement necessary improvements and increase efficiency and effectiveness to optimize Bet Tzedek's performance.
  • Provide effective and efficient management of day-to-day office operations, including managing office operations team and systems.
  • Manage staff to ensure robust and effective support on facilities for staff across all regions
  • Oversee staff in office space planning and lease negotiations, as appropriate
  • Oversee vendor management, space planning, relocations, and disaster planning during relevant planning periods
  • Develop and maintain all required agency-wide internal operations policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Participate in Union/Management Committees


Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 8+ years of strong operational experience: ideally has worked in a senior management role for 5+ years (preferred);
  • Demonstrable competency in organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning (required);
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team (required);
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems (required);
  • Demonstrate commitment to Bet Tzedek' s mission to provide free legal services to those who need them most (required);
  • Demonstrate commitment to applying principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in performance of job duties (required);
  • Working knowledge of IT/Business infrastructure;
  • Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving;
  • Highly collaborative, with an exceptional ability to listen and foster productive working relationships among the staff.
